Sir, Marjorie Bevan's letter is a perfect example of one- sidedness. It's no surprise these days to see other political parties take advantage of any photo opportunity - it's called scoring points. Most of the projects mentioned in her letter would never have seen the light of day, including saving Withybush Hospital and the building of a dedicated Children's Hospital for Wales, paid for by charity donations, without the hard work of all volunteers, who should be congratulated. My main worry is she's claiming there has been a leap in everyone's standard of living and expectations. Where has she obtained her information? I know of several people whose expectations for this year are to try and stay solvent, whose standard of living has dropped considerably because Labour have increased stealth taxes. Their inability to reverse Tory privatisation of the public utilities means we're paying record prices for gas, electric and water; fuel duty has jumped, so food prices jump as well. First time buyers are at a record low, private rents cost as much as a mortgage, home repossessions near to the late 80s and council houses in short supply due to them being sold, a Tory policy never reversed, and record numbers leaving Wales for a better life abroad. As for unemployment, if Christine Gwyther and Nick Ainger had drawn all those nice paying jobs that keep going down the M4 from Pembrokeshire, we'd have less unemployment and more people who are happy and can have a reasonable standard of living. Instead, we have a big holiday complex that massages the unemployment figures, part paid for by us, the tax payers.
Mr. I. Williams, Flat 15a, Narberth.
