Primary school pupils in Pembroke and Pembroke Dock were rewarded for their commitment to safety recently, when the winners of Pembroke Dock Fire Station's annual fire work poster competition were announced.
Every year, full-time firefighter crews from the station visit schools throughout the Pembroke and Pembroke Dock area in the build-up to Bonfire Night, to provide fire safety advice to pupils and teachers before inviting Years 5 and 6 to design leaflets and Years 3 and 4 posters to highlight the importance of being safe around bonfires and fireworks.
The works were then kindly judged by Pembroke School's head of art, Mrs. K. Jones. Winners and runners-up were then invited to the station, to be presented with their prizes, which were once again sponsored by Valero Pembroke Refinery.
Watch manager Graeme Callan, said: "Every year we get a wonderful response from children across Pembroke and Pembroke Dock to this competition, and this year was no exception. The quality and effort put into the posters and leaflets was amazing, but what is even more heartening is that the message of being safe around fire and fireworks is getting to a new generation of children."
This year's winners and runners-up were Olive Le Britton Hughes (1st place, Orielton School), Rebecca Evans (2nd place, St. Mary's School) and Caitlin Chapman (3rd place, Pembroke Dock Community School) in the poster competition, and Georgie Lee (1st place, Orielton School), Rhys Thomas (2nd place, St. Mary's School) and Lucy Richards (3rd place, Angle School) in the leaflet competition.
Valero public affairs manager, Stephen Thornton, who was on hand to present the prizes, said: "The work done by Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service in keeping us safe, both during firework season and throughout the year, is incredible and Valero are delighted to be able to support Pembroke Dock Fire Station's innovative and informative campaign."
Although this was a competition aimed at a specific event, full-time firefighters at Pembroke Dock are available all year round to offer fire safety advice to the community.
