Concerned Pembroke town councillors, Pembroke Civic Trust and Pembroke Environment Volunteers want to draw attention to the threat facing Pembroke’s conservation area and wildlife corridor on the north shore of Pembroke Millpond.

Planning permission is being sought to cut down even more mature trees by Idris Davies Developments which has already built one large, executive home on this site with subsequent loss of trees and habitat.

Town councillors Linda Asman, Rose Blackburn and Jon Harvey stress that this development was done in direct opposition to the concerns of town council and community.

They wish to state: “Planning permission should not have been granted on what is a conservation area, local nature reserve, wildlife corridor and local beauty spot. Pembroke has lost so many trees and green spaces - after this developer has done his worst, the only green space along the whole of the north conservation area will be that in front of Riverside. Unless we fight for it, we will lose this too. The developer’s reason for felling these healthy, beautiful trees is that they are elms and may catch Dutch Elm Disease which would result in them dying. The real reason of course is that they stand directly in front of the next building plot to be developed and his houses have been advertised as having ‘spectacular views over Pembroke Castle and the Millpond’. The trees block that view and Idris Davies Developments wants them felled.”

Local resident Mrs. Lyn Edwards also expressed her concerns: “As a resident of Riverside Close, I am distressed to learn that the developers are going to cut down even more trees on the edge of the Mill Pond which is on conservation land and full of wild life. The land the developers own has been left in a mess for many months and is a danger to children and wild birds and animals. They have also already taken down a number of trees and hacked the hedging. I hope and pray that something can be done about this situation.”
