Over the past few years, a number of safety improvements and active travel links have been introduced into Saundersfoot, including the new pavement connecting Broadfield Hill to the village and other enhancements around the Railway Station.
In November last year, Pembrokeshire County Council held a consultation on the Active Travel proposals for Saundersfoot, which gave residents the opportunity to raise their concerns and provide valuable feedback.
“While not all initial proposals were warmly received, PCC has since gone back, listened carefully to local views, and made important revisions to reflect the needs and priorities of residents,” said County Councillor Chris Williams.
“Cambrian Terrace emerged as a key focus area during this consultation. The parking spaces located there are vital for supporting local businesses and the community, providing a balance of disabled bays, 30-minute parking spaces, and a designated loading bay for nearby businesses.
“As part of the wider Active Travel plan, there is a clear need to create a safe and accessible link between Milford Street and The Strand. This new connection will integrate with the established routes to Coppet Hall, Wisemans Bridge, and Saundersfoot School, via a new proposed active travel link from Coppet Hall, Frances Road and Lane, ensuring a continuous and safe active travel route for pedestrians and cyclists.”
Over recent years, both Cllr Williams and fellow County Councillor Alec Cormack have held numerous discussions with PCC to ensure that these plans strike the right balance between improving safety and maintaining essential parking provision in the village.
Works are due to commence shortly, to be delivered by Evan Pritchard Contractors; with works on Stammers Road and surrounding areas expected to continue until March 30, 2026, with planned breaks during holidays to minimise disruption.
In relation to Cambrian Terrace, under a revised plan, there will be the potential loss of one parking bay, which will be compensated by an additional bay created on Brewery Terrace.
The new Cambrian Terrace layout will include a timed loading bay that converts into two short-stay parking bays after 10am. A new formal zebra crossing will also be introduced near the roundabout, further enhancing pedestrian safety.
On Stammers Road and Brewery Terrace, the proposed footway widening will allow for the introduction of a new parking bay to offset the minor reduction on Cambrian Terrace.
The current loading bay on Brewery Terrace will also be timed for dual use to support businesses during deliveries and provide short-stay parking at other times.
“Cllr Cormack and I are strongly promoting this as a dual loading bay. This will result in two additional 30-minute bays and a further three new parking bays in the village centre, in addition to the two extra bays available on Cambrian Terrace after 10am,” continued Cllr Williams.
“These improvements have been shaped by the views of local residents and are designed to improve safety, accessibility, and overall movement through the village. They reflect a strong balance between supporting businesses, protecting essential parking, and ensuring the safety of pedestrians and road users.”
