Saundersfoot is set to re-enter the Wales in Bloom contest in 2026, after a hiatus this year.

Members of Saundersfoot Community Council at their recent meeting were presented a report prepared by Cllr Eleanor Jones.

The report proposed that the Community Council next year enters the seaside village into the event again and manages the application for a contest that Saundersfoot has enjoyed plenty of success in, down the years.

She noted the work done by Saundersfoot in Bloom over many years but even though they were unable to enter the village for the competition for 2026, members would still continue to plant and maintain the various troughs/flower beds e.g. on brewery Terrace.

This year, with the village not entered into the RHS Wales in Bloom competition, Saundersfoot in Bloom still allowed for green-fingered locals to enter a special garden competition, where residents could nominate a front garden that brightens their day.

“It's been such a privilege to be able to let people know that their garden space has been nominated - some have stood in disbelief, some have cried happy tears - and all have grinned like Cheshire cats once the shock has worn off!” shared a spokesperson for Saundersfoot in Bloom this summer.

Cllr Jones proposed that the Community Council establish a ‘Wales in Bloom Working Group’ and submit an application for 2026, as soon as nominations open in October.

It was stated that local groups and residents e.g. Saundersfoot Wombles would be welcomed to become members of the Working Group.

Councillors unanimously voted in favour of the proposals set out in detail by Cllr Jones in her report.

“I hope you will agree it appropriate that Saundersfoot Community Council enter the competition, building on recent success and maintain Saundersfoot’s presence in this national competition,” she said.

“The matter is listed now to allow a ‘soft launch’ in early autumn to enable preparation to begin.”

With Saundersfoot in Bloom volunteers to continue to plant troughs etc around the village (and asked to maintain a ‘gold standard’) - volunteers from the Wombles will co-ordinate the planting and maintaining of other areas around the village, continuing their engagement with numerous village organisations including the Sailing Club, Youth Club, Saundersfoot Social and others.

The Wombles will also continue to organise regular litter picks.

The Community Counci will engage with the Wombles and other village organisations to set out a co-ordinated approach to preparation for the competition; joining a working party of key organisations.

The Community Council will maintain the Sensory Garden (including SMELT display) to its current ‘gold standard’; work with Love Saundersfoot and businesses generally, to ensure that hanging baskets are again hung about the village (which were previously noted by the Wales in Bloom assessor as making a positive contribution to the village in terms of entry.)

The wildflower display along boundary of Saundersfoot Bowling Club will also continue.

The Community Council will promote a whole village approach to the competition using its newsletter and social media accounts.
