Hebron Baptist Church
At the service last Sunday, Mr. Anthony Standing was the speaker and his selected Bible reading was Hebrews 4 v1-11. Miss Helen Standing was the pianist and Mr. and Mrs. Taberer were the welcome and communion stewards.
Mrs. Standing concealed the visual aids for the talk for the young people in a little blue bag, and she invited the congregation to guess what edible items might be inside. Chocolate was a popular suggestion. Manufacturers of chocolate biscuits recognise that there are benefits from taking a break and reinforce the idea by the advertising and naming of the biscuits like Breakaway and Time Out and the Kit Kat slogan 'Take a break, take a Kit Kat.'
Mrs. Standing said: "We all want to be doing something' and young people are no exception. Mr. Standing's brother was well-known in the family as a boy for always asking 'What are we going to do next.' When we are always busy doing, and filling our lives with activities, hobbies and pleasures, we don't always give enough time for talking and listening to God. If we hurry through our time with God we will not understand what we read or give God time to speak to our hearts.
Mr. Standing later returned to 'Signposts along Life's Journey.' In the autumn, he reminded the congregation, the first sign we came to was 'Narrow Bridge' The bridge is the Lord Jesus Christ who bridged the great chasm between ourselves and God. This toll bridge charge was paid by Jesus dying for us. To cross into a life of forgiveness we should accept that Jesus died for all our mistakes.
Crossing the bridge changed our destination and our hearts - we now have a yearning to please God though this doesn't mean we are free from the reality of sin's presence in our old nature, but its mastery and domination over us are null and void.
Services, picnic area, or in Wales, Gwasenaethau, are welcome signs offering us a place to stop and rest awhile along the journey. Living in the fast lane of life has caused a lot of anxiety. In the USA two of the most prescribed drugs are Prozac used to treat depression and Tagamet which eases pain caused by ulcers.
As we struggle to survive our rush-hour world, God provides us with a spiritual 'Service Area' where we can refuel and refresh ourselves, away from the grind of everyday life. Hebrews 4 v 1-11 hints at the kind of rest we are after. It primarily refers to eternal rest, assuring the believer of entering the rest of the Lord when we go to Heaven. But we don't have to wait till then, we can have rest right now living today in the hope and reality of our eternal future.
Rest requires faith v2, 3, rest requires ceasing v 4-6, and rest requires time v 7-8.
Spending time remembering that God will meet our needs, rather than thinking we need to work continually for extra comforts will give us more peace of mind than material things ever will. We can entrust our burdens to God who will meet our real needs. Are we prepared to take a break and recharge so that we can work to our greater strength?
This Sunday at 11 am, the speaker will be Mrs. Jenny Gough with activities for young people in the hall during the message. Tuesday Club meet at the Poppies at 6 pm. The subject taken by the preacher Mr. Crowle, on Sunday, was Jesus the Good Shepherd as related in John chapter 10.
Jesus describes himself as the gate through which his sheep can come and go safely. They know his voice and follow him. As a good shepherd, he will lay down his life for his flock. Not like a hired servant (an allusion to the Pharisees suggested the preacher) who runs away from danger because he cares nothing for the sheep which are not his own.
This Sunday morning at 11 am the service will be led by Mrs. Muir Bird. A warm welcome is extended to all.
