Residents in and around Saundersfoot have been asked to report any suspected fly-tipping around the seaside village, after a recent incident where a ‘significant amount of rubbish’ of commercial waste was deliberately dumped, and traced to a business outside of the area, left a local county councillor ‘incensed’.
County Councillor for the south ward Cllr Chris Williams said that the recent incident was reported on a Sunday at the end of last month.
“At approximately 1.15 pm, while driving along Fan Road, I came across a significant amount of rubbish scattered across the road, including a large box and a black bag in the road,” he stated.
“I pulled over to move the items to the side as this could have caused an accident. Upon closer inspection, I discovered several more black bags and cardboard boxes filled with commercial waste.
“This included soft drink containers, food packaging, and waste food. It was clear that a large quantity of rubbish had been deliberately dumped on what is arguably the quietest stretch of this road,” continued Cllr Williams.
“As someone who voluntarily picks litter along Fan Road, I was absolutely incensed by this blatant act of disrespect, not just towards the local community but also to our wider county.
“It’s deeply disheartening to think that individuals may have visited our village for a pleasant day out, only to repay that hospitality by dumping such disgraceful waste.”
Cllr Williams said that he knew that once he’d reported the matter to Pembrokeshire County Council, it would be investigated urgently by officers, and that every effort would be made to identify those responsible and pursue a conviction for this clear act of fly-tipping.
“An address was retrieved from the waste and that is from a business outside of Pembrokeshire,” revealed Cllr Williams.
“I would also like to thank the PCC team who came out immediately to pick up this waste and tried to gather as much evidence as possible,” he continued, urging any residents if they see anything suspicious to please pass on their concerns to the Local Authority.
On further incidents relating to waste dumping issues in the village, Cllr Williams said that he’d had a ‘positive update’ regarding Bethany Flats.
“I had to call out Pembrokeshire County Council again at this location due to fly-tipping and the fact that that the bin store is easily accessible.
“I had another meeting on site and at long last, as this has been going on for years, PCC have now agreed to construct a fence to deter eyes from the wheelie bin and hopefully, this will improve the issues.
“Further, the bins have been emptied more frequently and the residents have all been given updated literature on recycling. I had to chase up regarding the bin on Milford Street as it was blocked in and couldn’t be emptied.
“Thank you to the staff at the Argosy for sorting this out and for repositioning it so that it could be used,” he added.
