On a glorious summer's day, Saundersfoot held its annual carnival on Sunday at the King George V Playing Fields. Proceedings commenced at 2 pm when Mrs. Mary Cavell, chairman of Saundersfoot Community Council, crowned this year's Carnival Queen, Lauren Williams. Lauren's attendants were Emily Mielke and Leah Thomas. Also on the float, which had been decorated that morning by the mothers, was Fairy Queen, Ffion Davies, with attendants Caitlin Thomas and Jessica Booton, the Carnival King, Matthew Williams, and Prince Charming, William Davies. The Carnival Queen float then led the other floats and assembled fancy dress walkers around the village and back to the field. Once back on the field, the judging of the floats and fancy dress took place. First place in the float section went to St. Issell's Rainbows, who narrowly pushed the St. Issell's Plumbing Services into second place, both floats having a nautical theme, and third place went to Ocean Hair Design. The best dressed group of walkers went to the Bash Street Kids, while the 11 and over winners were Shrek and Donkey. The kids sports were held next, ably organised and sponsored by the Saundersfoot Rotary Club. The Golden Welly throwing contest was next and was eagerly contested, with the winners of the men's and ladies' contests each receiving a replica Golden Welly. The lucky programme draw, with a £100 first prize, was won by Carla Stevens, but the second prize of a 1.5 litre bottle of whisky remained uncollected. The winning number for the whisky was 438. Anyone with that number should contact the Sports Club to collect their prize. The final event of the afternoon was a display of Irish Dancing by the Julie Hynes School of Irish Dancing. The organisers of the carnival would like to thank Redwing Travel, Rose Caine, The Sands Nitespot and Hillcroft Garage for their sponsorship of the fancy dress, Michael Merriman for his loan of the Carnival Queen float and the village businesses for their continued support. Special thanks goes to Alan Brindley for compering the event successfully.
