A rather dull start to the finals weekend. Hopes were high that the weather would be good and, apart from a couple of minutes on the Saturday morning, it did its best to be kind.

Among the early starters were Katherine Blayney and Alwen Hughes in the Ladies Handicap. A cracking game ended with Kath grabbing the honours.

At the opposite end, Ann Lewis was playing Joan Lee in the two-wood singles. Another exciting game saw Ann emerge victorious.

The mixed triples saw Dave Robb with two of the juniors, James Criddle and Dana Rogers, run out winners in the battle against John Moffat and Roy and Kay Kennion.

Geoff Spiller and Phil Carpenter won their two- wood pairs game against Macky Brace and Brian Deeley, while the Hughes men, Graham and Gareth, beat John Roberts and John Baggott in the four- wood pairs.

The afternoon session saw Dana Rogers once again in action with Dave Robb in the mixed pairs against Gareth and Alwen Hughes.

After another win under her belt, Dana was the talk of the pavilion for her calm demeanour and drawing skills. In both her games she had shown excellent talent and when the experienced lady bowlers in the club say she can go far, it can only mean even more success for the club. We have not had a lady bowler so young make the grade for some years, so hopefully Dana will carry the torch next year at county level, and who knows maybe even further.

Thankfully the weather stayed kind for the club championships. Ann Lewis played Lorna Bissell in a game that had everything good about bowls.

In the men's final, Steve Dick met John Roberts and at times had John puffing extra heavy on his cigarette. Again a terrific match, with John the victor.

Steve was back on later in the final of the Rabbits against his son Mathew. This was a real cracker of a game. Most watchers wanted young Mathew to win - probably even Steve himself did - but both played excellent woods, before Steve eventually took the honours, winning 21-20.

It was an excellent weekend of bowling and the culmination of Barry Lees's hard work in organising it all. Final results were:
