County president's day

West Wales Ladies Bowling Association president Ann Lewis hosted her annual president's day at her club, Saundersfoot, on Tuesday. And what a happy occasion it turned out to be - even the sun came out to join in the celebrations! Members of Saundersfoot joined with players from other clubs in the county, as well as some of Ann's colleagues and friends from the Welsh team, for the afternoon which took the form of a bowls drive. Sixty-four bowlers played in the competition, organised by club chairman Paul Blayney, with the green having to be adjusted to accommodate eight rinks. There was much laughter on the green as friendships were made and renewed. Winners of the 'round robin drive' were Di Davies (Pembroke Dock), Anne Davies (Saundersfoot), Val Howell (Guest Memorial) and Susan Evans (Whitland), who each received a gift from Ann afterwards. And there was a prize too for Ann Gray (Fishguard), Lorna Bissell, Beryl Lawrence and Sue Roden (all Saundersfoot), who didn't quite make top rink! In addition, there were two spiders for two bottles of whisky, one donated by Saundersfoot club president John Evans and the other by county secretary Ann Thomas. The first winner was Elsie Pendlebury (Saundersfoot), while the second was Val Howell (Guest Memorial). Canon Michael Butler, of St. Issell's Church, and his wife Georgina were among the guests, with Canon Butler saying grace prior to a delicious buffet. Wishing Ann well for the rest of her year in office, Canon Butler added: "You are a credit to the village, your county and to Wales. We are very proud of you and thankyou for sharing this happy and joyful day with us." Other guests included Welsh Women's Bowling Association president, Julia King-Thomas (Tenby), Linda Evans (Port Talbot (WWBA treasurer), Miss Linda Parker MBE (Knighton), recently retired Welsh secretary, Helen Lewis John, Neyland, retired county secretary and Welsh selector, Valmai Whiteford (Whitland), current Welsh selector, and Saundersfoot BC president, John Evans. The West Wales Ladies Bowling Association is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and a magnificent cake commemorating the silver jubilee, which had been made and iced by Ann Griffiths, and given for the occasion by county treasurer Mary Cavell, was cut by president Ann. There was also entertainment with a lively display of Irish dancing by Ann's granddaughter Leah, which everyone enjoyed. Ann thanked everyone for attending, some of whom had travelled a long way, and said what an honour it was to be president during the association's silver jubilee year. She also made special 'thank you' presentations to her helpers Anne Davies and Chris Haley, her Brian (Deeley) for all his support and work at the club, and Paul Blayney for organising the competition. On behalf of everyone present, Ann Thomas, county secretary, thanked Ann for a "fantastic day" which she said everyone had "thoroughly enjoyed". Saundersfoot 118 Chameleons 105

Saundersfoot entertained the Chameleons in a mixed friendly on Friday. John Evans, Sue Roden, Billy Glynn and Keith Rowland had the biggest win of the afternoon, chalking up a 30-10 success. There were wins also for Newton Griffiths, Elaine Shaw, John Austin and Marion Evans, who were victorious 22-13, while Peter Lewis, Joyce Waters, Mike Carr and Neville Ruff took a four on the last end to run out 22-17 winners. Pearl Thomas, Frank Buckley, Audrey Williams and Roy Kennion were just pipped at the post, losing out by one, Elsie Pendlebury, John Bingham, George Cavell and Lorna Bissell went down 13-25, and Lyn Statters, Colin Roden, Peter Bissell and Roy Pring finished 15-23 adrift.
