Saundersfoot Bowling Club's ladies' captain, Kath Blayney, celebrated her Captain's Day in fine style on Friday. Twenty-eight ladies enjoyed a memorable day, hosted by Kath, which included a game of bowls followed by a three-course meal and programme of entertainment. The afternoon began with a spider - won by Angela Roberts, who later received a bottle of whisky - before the bowlers were split into five groups to play in a round-robin of five ends. Competition was keen, with the winners being Chris Haley, Alwen Hughes, Viv Edwards and Gloria Dugmore, who received a gift from Kath. The theme of the day was Ascot and there was also a competition for the best hat which attracted a large number of colourful creations. Some had made their own bowls-themed headgear, while others opted for the more traditional Ascot-type hats. Judges Eiddwen Brace and Mary Cavell had a very difficult job in choosing the winners, but finally decided that Alwen Hughes's My Fair Lady-themed hat was the best. After being wined and dined, Kath thanked all the ladies for attending and helping make the afternoon a success, before making a number of special presentations. She gave gifts to her two St. Issell's co-selectors, Diane Rigden and Amanda Lewis, Amanda also receiving a special present for her friendship, culinary expertise and advice in helping Kath arrange the afternoon. Flowers were also presented to Kath's two main assistants, Amanda and Gloria Dugmore, Mary Cavell, Lorna Bissell and Alwen Hughes, who also helped with the preparation. And for the waiters - Paul Blayney, John Roberts, George Cavell, John Dugmore and Ronnie Brabon - there were tokens of appreciation too. Thanks were also extended to Brian Deeley for manning the bar and Ann Lewis for the flower arrangements on the tables. "It's been a great honour to be ladies captain," said Kath. "I haven't been playing bowls for many years, although I've been involved in the game since 1980," she continued. "I've made so many friends here in this club and throughout the county and further afield and having finally received the keys to our new bungalow after spending our summers down here in our caravan for 17 years, I feel that I am now truly a part of the community." The final presentation was that of the Captain's Shield, presented every year to a member who the captain feels deserves special recognition. Said Kath: "Having thought long and hard about it and realising that there are several worthy candidates, I wish I could have given several shields, but I have decided that for winning her first senior international cap and for all her hard work in publicising Saundersfoot Bowling Club each week, the Captain's Shield goes to Ceris Hewlings." Ladies chairman, Ann Lewis, then gave the vote of thanks to Kath for a wonderful afternoon. Entertainment followed, with a special appearance by John Dugmore and his two puppet friends, while the proceedings were rounded off with a horse racing event, with jockeys Kath, Amanda and Gloria taking the reins. All in all, it was a truly memorable day - thanks Kath!
