The highlight of the week at Saundersfoot Bowling Club was the successful Ladies Open Triples and Singles competitions staged on Friday and Saturday.

Competition was keen in both events, which saw a feast of bowling, plus plenty of laughter, in glorious sunshine.

In the triples, it was a round robin, with competitors split into two groups, the winners of each going on to play in the final.

Winners of Section A were Cynthia Evans, Jo Shewry and Cally Jones, of Whitland, while Viv Edwards, Beryl Lawrence and Gloria Dugmore finished top of Section B.

The final was a keenly fought contest, with the visitors just getting the better of the homeside.

Club vice-chairman, Ann Lewis, thanked everyone involved for making the event a success, including organisers, Joan and Barrie Lee and Joyce Waters, umpire, Julia King Thomas, the greenkeeper and those who had set out the rinks, plus of course the competitors, before handing over to Clr. Mrs. Mary Cavell, chairman of Saundersfoot Community Council, who presented the awards - her first official engagement since being elected chairman.

On the Saturday, the format was a straight knockout singles competition.

Saundersfoot's Shirley Spiller won the main event, the Joan Osborne Trophy, beating clubmate, Kay Kennion, 18-12 in an exciting final.

Jo Shewry, of Whitland, was celebrating for the second day running after she won the Joan Proctor Shield, chalking up a 15-11 victory over Carol Jones, of Pendine, in the final.

Organiser, Joan Lee, presented the prizes and again thanked everyone for making the tournament a success.

GOOD LUCK ANN

Everyone at the club wishes Ann Lewis a successful international series in Scotland this coming week. Ann leaves tomorrow (Saturday) for the event which will see Wales take on England, Ireland and the home nation at Ayr.

Ann will be skipping her rink of Caroline Taylor and Hazel Wilson, of Berriw, and Stella Oliver, of Llanelli - we hope you bring back Eve, Ann. Have a brilliant series.

DIVISION ONE

SAUNDERSFOOT 73 (5 pts.) WHITLAND 94 (9)

Saundersfoot travelled to Whitland on Saturday, which as always, turned out to be a very tough match.

Saundersfoot looked to be in control for the first half until the rink skipped by stand-in captain David Poole dropped count after count following the tea break. This rink turned out to be the big difference in the match and were the only losing Saundersfoot rink on the afternoon.

On rink four, the rink skipped by Paul Diment beat the Whitland rink skipped by Chris Court by three shots. This was a very low scoring game, with only 29 shots scored between the rinks over the 21 ends, which included two counts of four.

On rink five, Graham Hughes, John Jenkins, Don Poole and Mal Bishop drew Colin Wynn. The Saundersfoot rink looked to be well in control after 12 ends when they were 21-8, but the only took one more shot over the final nine ends.

The game on rink six between the four skipped by Phil Carpenter and Whitland's Glyndwr Thomas was a very close match, which the Saundersfoot boys won by three shots to take the two points.

This turned out to be a valiant effort by the team, with quite a few players being unavailable. Better commitment will be required if the Saundersfoot team are to win the league for the third successive year.

Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, Whitland skips only) were: Geoff Spiller, Gareth Hughes, Macky Brace, David Poole 11; Steve Reese 38. Denvor Williams, John Dugmore, John Baggott, Paul Diment 16; Chris Court 13. Graham Hughes, John Jenkins, Don Poole, Mal Bishop 22; Colin Wynn 22. Paul Blayney, Paul Criddle, Myrddin Dennis, Phil Carpenter 24; Glyndwr Thomas 21.

Haverfordwest 110 (14 pts.) St. Issell's 69 (0)   On another day made for bowling - are we getting spoiled? - St. Issell's travelled to take on a strong Haverfordwest side pushing for top spot.

Rink three saw the St. Issell's team fall well behind after 14 ends, but the rink of D. Williams, G. Davies, B. Deeley and skip Les Davies, who were all playing well, won six of the last seven ends, to lose by only two shots, 22-24, a very commendable effort.

One rink four, the St. Issell's rink of young J. Dennis, J. Austin, B. Llewellyn and skip Steve Dick took and held the lead right up to the dreaded tea break, which we all know can change a game. After the interval, they lost a five and a four to go down at the end 21-30.

On rink five, up against a strong rink all playing well, the St. Issell's rink of new lead, M. Hughes, P. Bissell, N. Ruff and skip D. Newton, struggled to stay with their opponents and eventually went down 14-30.

On rink six, G. Cavell, D. Greaves, B. Lee and skip A. Brace stayed in contention with their opponents and were in the game right up to end 16, but then faded to lose five of the last six ends to go down 12 to 26.

Rink scores (St. Issell's first, Haverfordwest skips only) were: D. Williams, G. Davies, B. Deeley, L. Davies 22; C. Jones 24. J. Dennis, J. Austin, B. Llewellyn, S. Dick 21; B. Jenkins 30. M. Hughes, P. Bissell, N. Ruff, D. Newton 14; J. Docherty 30. G Cavell, D. Greaves, B. Lee, A. Brace 12; P. John 26.

Ladies' league

The ladies of St. Issell's suffered two defeats when they travelled to Haverfordwest to play Cleddau and also played Saundersfoot (writes Spectator).

CLEDDAU 51 ST. ISSELL'S 25

On a very hot day, both St. Issell's rinks struggled to find line and length on a tricky green and came away with no points.

Rink scores (St. Issell's first Cleddau skips only): D. Rigden, V. Austin, B. Lawrence, B. Lewis 11; A. Thomas 30. K. Blayney, M. Cavell, A. J. Lewis, G. Dugmore 14; W. Howells 21.

SAUNDERSFOOT 62 ST. ISSELL'S 25

Two days later, on another splendid day for bowling, the St. Issell's ladies 'travelled' to Saundersfoot, holders of the league title for the past three years (not two, as I stated last week - wrists suitably slapped by Kay Kennion, sorry!)

Despite a good start, with both teams playing some excellent shots, Saundersfoot soon got on top and never looked back to run out convincing winners by 37 shots, taking all six points.

Rink scores (St. Issell's first): P. Thomas, D. Rigden, S. Spiller, B. Lewis 18; A. Hughes, A. Davies, L. Bissell, K. Kennion 29. K. Blayney, B. Davies, A. J. Lewis, B. Lawrence 7; J. Lee, P. Gulliver, V. Edwards, M. Evans 33. A busy week lies ahead, with the St. Issell's girls playing Neyland at home on Monday (5.30 start), Fishguard away on Tuesday (2 pm) and Pembroke Dock Park away next Friday (2 pm).

SAUNDERSFOOT 55 CLEDDAU 34

Saundersfoot Ladies picked up another full house of points for the second day running on Tuesday when they played Cleddau at home.

The team continued where they left off after beating St. Issell's the day before by chalking up a 21-shot victory.

Marion Evans led her rink of Angela Roberts, Joyce Waters and Viv Edwards to a 33-22 win over Beryl Haddock.

The high-scoring match saw Saundersfoot pick up two sixes, a five and two fours along the way. Kay Kennion and her rink of Elsie Pendlebury, Anne Davies and Lorna Bissell were also in fine form, finishing 27-12 ahead of Ann Thomas.

Saundersfoot were away to Tenby on Wednesday and have another busy week's bowling ahead. Results next week.
