CARRUTHERS SHIELD SAUNDERSFOOT 78 TENBY 86

Saundersfoot played Tenby last Saturday in their final qualifying game of the Carruthers Shield. This game, sponsored by Dai Lawrence and Mandy, of the Temple Bar Inn, Amroth, was played in great spirit and was very tight throughout. Saundersfoot looked to have won the game late on by going into a comfortable lead, only to throw it all away on the 20th and 21st end, losing these final ends by 19 shots to 2. On rink two, Graham Hughes, Brian Jones, Macky Brace and David Poole, beat Tenby's Peter Day by 10 shots. The Saundersfoot four were always in control of this match and were 17 shots clear after 16 ends. However, they dropped a six on the 20th end when Peter Day played an accurate bowl to remove the only Saundersfoot bowl from the head. Rink three saw a close tussle between the fours skipped by Saundersfoot's Stephen Poole and Tenby's Pat Currie. The Saundersfoot rink were well down early on in the game, but after the 20th end they were two shots the better until they dropped a three on the final end, eventually losing by a single shot. On rink four, Saundersfoot's Paul Diment lost to the rink skipped by Terry Howells. The Tenby rink were too strong on the day. The Saundersfoot four lost the last five ends of the match, dropping a single on all these ends. The final rink was between the Saundersfoot four skipped by Phil Carpenter and Tenby's Andrew Muskett. This was a close match until late on in the match when Saundersfoot lost the last four ends, dropping nine shots. The rink eventually lost 13 -22. After the game, captain Macky and the Saundersfoot boys, wished Tenby well in the next round of the competition. The Saundersfoot players would also like to wish John Roberts good luck in his Welsh trial on Sunday. Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, Tenby skips only) were: Graham Hughes, Brian Jones, Macky Brace, David Poole 30; Peter Day 20. Roy Kennion, Paul Blayney, John Roberts, Stephen Poole 22; Pat Currie 23. John Evans, James Criddle, John Baggott, Paul Diment 13; Terry Howells 21. Geoff Spiller, John Dugmore, Myrddin Dennis, Phil Carpenter 13; Andrew Muskett 22.

DIVISION ONE

MILFORD 87 (14 pts.) ST. ISSELL'S 54 (0)

Another busy week for the club league teams, whilst trying to make sure that you could watch the cup final. Unfortunately, the St. Issell's lads drew the short straw, and had to travel to play Milford on the same night. Not too much trouble to most, but young Sam Anderson a red hot Liverpool fan was like a cat on a hot tin roof, and when the blokes watching the game on the green nipped in to see the TV, and then passed on the news that they were getting beaten, his face was a picture. Thankfully, we got in off the green in time to see the most exciting bits. Talk about great come backs by Liverpool. Mike Gouldingay is getting a reputation for doing the same thing. In this game, he was 8-0 down after eight ends, only to chivvy his team mates, Peter Gilder, Peter Bissell and Dave Greaves, to roll up their socks, ending up only losing by one-shot against the experienced Peter Collins. John Jenkins and his lads were having a see saw game up on end down the next, eventually losing 18 shots in nine ends shut the door completely on any come back. John Moffat and his rink of Tony Shaw, John Austin, and Alan Brace, were getting put through the mincer by Barry Howells and his merry men, who never gave them a sniff of the jack. Dave Robb's foursome of Roy Kennion, Sam Anderson, Derek Newton, were having a ding-dong affair against Ernie Sturley and Brian Davies. Despite being eight shots adrift at tea, the visitors hung on and gradually whittled away at the score to just lose by the one shot also. This was a set-back to the great start the St. Issell's lads have had, but captain John is sure they will bounce back for the next game.

LADIES SECTION

SAUNDERSFOOT LADIES 44 CLEDDAU 33

A winning rink and a losing rink is fair goes as they say, but Lorna Bissell's rink fought all the way, unfortunately dropping a four on the last end killed-off all hopes. Meanwhile, Marion Evans and her foursome had an easier ride against Ann Thomas, winning comfortably. Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, Cleddau skips only) were: J. Lee, J. Waters, V. Edwards, M. Evans 26; A. Thomas 10. A. Davies, E. Shaw, K. Kennion, L. Bissell 18; M. McCue 23.

SAUNDERSFOOT LADIES 65 PENDINE 17

As the old song goes, what a difference a day makes. It certainly did for the Saundersfoot Ladies, when they ran the unfortunate Pendine girls ragged. It was an amazing score board, with Marion Evans leading her rink against Doris Howells, and allowing them to win only four ends. Lorna Bissell's rink also reached the 30s, but had 13 shots against, nevertheless again, only seven ends were dropped. The Pendine girls had no answer to the power play of the visitors. Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, Pendine skips only) were: E. Pendlebury, E. Shaw, K. Kennion, L. Bissell 35; J. Simpson 13. J. Lee, A. Davies, V. Edwards, M. Evans 30; D. Howells 4.

FRIENDLY

SAUNDERSFOOT 102 MALMeSBURY TOURERS 121

For those that wish to know, Dave Robb's rink lost by 10 shots in this game. It seems that a few of the players were more interested in that score than their own, and wondered whether it would be mentioned in the report, so it has now been noted, perhaps, they should also note that there was only the one winning rink from the home team, once again Mike Gouldingay and his rink carrying out a 'great escape'. At one stage 13 shots down, they came back to be the only winning rink. The other rinks were close run things - these tourers were no mugs, they were only playing two games on the tour, but they certainly know how to deliver a wood, as well as supping a few ales, before, in between, and after. The weather was superb and the company enjoyable.

100 CLUB

The draw was made for the monthly winners of the 100 club draw and this month's happy winners are: £25 - Ron Skidmore (number 60); £15 - Sylvia Greaves (number 52). There are still vacancies should anyone wish to join the 100 Club. Contact Beryl Lawrence for details.

SUNDAY MORNING COACHING

The Sunday morning coaching for juniors commenced a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, the support for this venture is not forthcoming this year. Would all juniors who have played in the club over the past years please note, coaching is from 10.30 until 11.45 am every Sunday morning. This year, the club is involved with running its own junior open singles competition, which has received international press coverage through the Bowls International magazine. There is the Whitland tournament and of course the highly popular junior finals day, but the coaches cannot be expected to turn up on a Sunday morning, giving up their time for only a couple of juniors. If the timing does not suit, contact Dave and another time can be arranged to suit all.

SOCIAL EVENING

In conjunction with the club sponsors, there will be a cheese and wine evening, in the pavilion on Wednesday, July 13. The exact details are not in hand at the moment, but make a date in your diaries, folks.
