SAUNDERSFOOT 105 KINETON TOURERS 122
Stepping straight onto the green after a five-hour journey from Warwickshire, the Kineton players certainly did not look or play like the overly tired bowlers we expected. It took them a few ends to come to grips with the brilliant green (their words not mine), but once they did, they showed some deft touches around the jack. The most important part about the game was the sound of laughter that could be heard all day. With the sun beating down and plenty of waiters to fetch and carry the drinks, the visitors certainly intend enjoying their stay in the county. Rink results were as follows (Saundersfoot first, Kineton Tourers skips only): A. Smith, J. Criddle, A. J. Lewis, J. Dugmore 16; A. Owens 25. E. Gulliver, J. Austin, K. Rowland, K. Kennion 25; C. Wixey 11. P. Thomas, K. Maidment, J. Lee, J. Baggott 14; P. Crighton 23. G. Vigus, T. Kinsey, G. Cavell, B. Lee 23; L. Male 16. G. Amos, G. Davies, R. Kennion, T. Shaw 16; B. Bassett 23. P. Lewis, S. Anderson, E. Shaw, D. Robb 11; R. Harris 24.
CLUB FINALS WEEKEND
From the first day the draw is put on the board for the club competitions, controversy abounds, arguments that so and so will not play the game when they are given dates, or the green should have stayed open despite the downpour, causing someone to try and re-arrange a game, it all came down to the finishing line last weekend, with the competitions reaching final stages. Once again a number of players found themselves in more than one final, and history was again created when three of the club juniors took part. Mathew Dick was in the Jubilee Pairs with Viv Edwards and also the Men's Triples with James Criddle and Phil Carpenter. Dana Rogers was in the Mixed Triples with James Criddle and Dave Robb, while James Criddle found himself in five finals. Along with the two mentioned before, he was in both the four and two-wood pairs with Dave Poole, and in the two-wood singles against the 'Feuhrer' himself, John Dugmore. Not bad going for 13-year-olds. A number of others were in two or more finals, giving Mike Gouldingay a headache trying to fit them all in so that none over-ran into the next scheduled game. Not the easiest of tasks, but once again somehow he managed it. The early games had Ron Brabon stepping in at the last moment to skip the two boys in the men's triples, Phil Carpenter being otherwise engaged, the trio of Dugmore, Dick and Moffat winning comfortably. Lorna Bissell was in the lead against Viv Edwards when the wheels came off, and she ended up losing narrowly. Ann Lewis and Gwenda Rees played well to beat Marion Evans and Mary Cummings in the ladies' pairs. The afternoon saw the singles matches take centre stage. The men's championship was between John Roberts and Don Stokes. John showed his new-found international status to win well. In the ladies, it was Mary Cummings who took the honours. The men's rabbits went to Neville Ruff in a canter against Keith Rowlands. Katherine Blayney delighted her fan club by winning against Beryl Lawrence, while Dave Robb took revenge on Roy Kennion, winning the handicap, Roy beating him last year in the over 60s singles. Young James Criddle gave John Dugmore a run for his money before succumbing to the old man's skills. The weekend was voted by all to be a great success, and once again Mike Gouldingay can sit back and relax until next year and the roundabout starts up again. Winners were as follows: Ladies two-wood singles: G. Rees 12; M. Cummings 21. Ladies handicap: L. Bissell 18; V. Edwards 21. Ladies rabbits: B. Lawrence 17; K. Blayney 21. Ladies pairs: M. BIRTHDAY WISHES
A long time since anyone admitted to having a birthday, but since I am in the firing line myself, I know for a fact that Tony Edwards is getting on a bit - he celebrated last Tuesday. As he and I share the same birthday, I will not reveal his age. Elaine Shaw is another Virgo and she was at least 21 yesterday. Hope the hangovers have gone by this time folks.
NARROW BIAS
