It would have taken a brave man to venture down near the club last week. On the Tuesday, it was the Ladies Section annual general meeting, followed by the Ladies League AGM on the Thursday. Both these events were held in the pavilion. While the Tuesday night went peacefully, and the respective officers were all duly elected, I hear tell that the Thursday night was, shall we say, a bit more lively. The following reports of both events are factual - no names have been altered to protect the guilty.
LADIES SECTION AGM
A good turnout of ladies for the meeting. Unfortunately, the dreaded 'flu bug that is knocking people flat on their backs at the moment took its toll. One notable absentee was Saundersfoot Ladies captain, Kay Kennion, who was unable to receive the accolades for her captaincy when the team won the Ladies League.
The following were elected to serve for next season: chairlady, Ann Lewis; secretary, Mary Cavell; treasurer, Joyce Waters; Ladies captain/Saundersfoot Ladies captain, Kay Kennion; vice-captain/St. Issell's captain, Beryl Lewis; vice-chairlady, Beryl Lawrence.
The ladies were rightly upbeat about their performances on the green during the previous season when Saundersfoot Ladies won the league, and the St. Issell's Ladies came in a very creditable fourth place. It is hoped that they will be able to build on that success and bring the silverware back to the club next season again.
LADIES LEAGUE AGM
The pavilion was to say the least bursting at the seams for this evening of meeting and enjoyment. After the official side of things was completed, the ladies partook of a buffet meal supplied by the catering girls of the club.
This was followed by what I understand was classed as entertainment. Reports received all talk about the shrieks of laughter, the singing (some of it in tune) and dancing (less said about that the better). All in all, a marvellous night of fun, and guess what, the only menfolk in sight were John, Mike and Brian - and they were trapped behind the bar.
When the reports filter back of the success of the evening, they will have to book the Regency for the next one and sell tickets.
CLUB AGM
All members of the club are reminded that the annual general meeting is on Wednesday, November 19, at 7 pm prompt. It is obviously important that everyone makes the effort to attend this meeting and register their votes. Please make the decision to come along.
NO REST FOR
THE WICKED
While most bowlers are resting during the winter period, possibly day dreaming of next season's exploits on the green, work is in hand to make sure that when you do turn up at the green on opening day, the lush surface that greets you encourages you even more to give of your all, in the field of battle (sounds quite poetic that doesn't it!).
Anyway, beavering away during the winter months is Chris. If you can remember what the green looked like on the last day of the season, keep that in mind and have a wander down to have another look.
While it still has a long way to go until Chris is totally satisfied with it, you will, I am sure, be amazed at the changes already in only a matter of a couple of months. It really looks lush and green and with all the sunny weather we have been having until recently, very tempting indeed to get out and have a roll-up. Unfortunately, we will have to make do with sticking to the indoors meanwhile, but do yourself a favour and have a gander at the green. I bet you wish your lawn looked as good.
WHIST EVENING
Another happy bunch of whisters met for an evening of fun and cards. Vera Burrows, notable by her absence, is probably sitting in the Florida sunshine as we read this - lucky girl.
Results, with six-and-a-half tables in play, were as follows: Top scorer - Rene Baggot; first lady - Gladys Cleaton; second lady - Gladys Irving; first gent - Richard Jones; second gent - Robert Irvine; first half top scorer - Vivian Dick; second half top scorer - Graham Brace; booby - John Austin; longest sitter - Heather Buckley; raffle - Pat Quinsee, John Austin, Gladys Cleaton and Robert Irvine.
THE LURGIE
Best wishes for a speedy recovery to all our members and whisters suffering from the lurgie ('flu bug). Keep it to yourselves please!
