ANNIVERSARY DINNER

Over the past couple of years, the club has organised its own Christmas dinner in the club. Cooked by the ladies and thoroughly enjoyed by all. This year will be no exception, the ladies are already getting everything down in detail and you will be regaled with the final results very soon I am sure. Because of the club celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, a number of members have asked whether we would be holding an anniversary dinner as part of the celebrations. It has been a marvellous season for us, with all the celebratory games against the likes of the Barbarians etc., but throughout all that, the magnificent meals enjoyed at those games, it was the ladies of the club who slaved away making the meals and then waiting on the tables. The idea this time is that we have an anniversary meal, but at a local restaurant.

To this end John Dugmore and co-hosts have come to an arrangement with a local hotel to organise a dinner for us in their restaurant, including entertainment. The only date available unfortunately is November 30. We could have tried for December 14, but I know for a fact that the club Christmas dinner will be on December 15. Nevertheless, you have plenty of time to make arrangements and get your diaries filled in. There will be a five-course meal, with all the trimmings, and of course the entertainment into the bargain. If you would like to go to the meal, you are asked to get in touch with either John Dugmore or Dave Robb and give them your details. Closing date for names will be October 26, so with nigh on six weeks to make plans it is hoped that all members will make the effort. Come on folks it is our 40th anniversary after all. Okay we did not win anything this year, but let's all get together and celebrate on November 30. Cost will be around the £10 mark per person.

REVUE OF THE SEASON

The season was certainly being looked forward to by members, all those anniversary games to play in, two teams in the First Division for the first time, St. Brides with a few experienced players having joined their ranks were hoping to better their first season's placings, both ladies teams champing at the bit and an influx of some new members to hopefully give that extra choice for the selectors.

The club tour to Exmouth started things off with a bang. Although the first day and the wind and rain gave you the feeling that maybe you should have stayed home, suddenly the rest of the week was brilliant sunshine and great bowling, and how about that ladies cabaret show on the Thursday night, sheer class. Back home the weather was doing its worst five friendly games cancelled because of flooding on the green. Slight panic was wavering on the fringes, but eventually as we should have known they would, Chris and Glyn managed to clear things up and off we went.

Saundersfoot first team had too many players missing for important games and did not have the strength at back up to keep hold of the county shield this season. St. Issell's after a catastrophic start settled down and ended up in the top half of the table, a marvellous first season and a learning one for a lot of players. St. Brides surpassed their expectations, shocking some teams with their results, next season must be looked forward to, as they can only get better again.

Both the ladies teams had some poor results and some cracking ones, finishing up once again near the top of the league.

The schools coaching programme in conjunction with Saundersfoot School was a great success. Out of the 80 or so who took part, 32 children joined the club as junior members. They had a friendly game against Ynyscynon and adapted well. Their highlight being the junior finals day, with 22 taking part. All in all a very enjoyable season.

Club captain Gwynfor Davies accredited himself well with all his speeches made at the various games, I don't think he told the same joke twice. He did get mixed up with the living and the dead, but that is another story altogether.

Thanks to all the members for their support and hard work, have a restful winter and here's to next season.

WHIST EVENINGS

The outdoor season is definitely over, when you hear that the weekly whist nights are about to start up again. Monday, September 30, starting prompt at 7.30 pm with hopefully all our old friends and maybe one or two new ones into the bargain. We could certainly do with welcoming more club members into the whist fold. How about it, if you are complete beginner you will be more than welcome. They are a friendly crowd of whisters, and will give you all the help you need. It is a cheap night out amongst friends, and the TV is rubbish on a Monday night anyway!

MANY THANKS

Normally by this time the call would have gone out for volunteers to come along for a work party, the aim to bring all the benches into storage for the winter. It had been planned for last weekend, but was cancelled for 'lack of work' in other words, once again Glyn Stephens and his merry band of helpers not content with coring the green, when they finished, they also stacked all the benches away for us. The ditch infill has also been rolled up and stacked so thanks to Glyn's efforts the work parties can fall out and relax. The club is lucky to have someone like Glyn willing to carry out work, over and above the call of duty so to speak.

A DAY AT THE RACES

Yes I know, the Marx Brothers had a film titled 'A Day at the Races', but don't worry I am not inviting you to a private showing, this is the eagerly awaited details that I know in the region of 50 or so bowlers from the county are looking forward to.

During the club tour earlier this year a number of our members went to Exeter races and had a great time, so much so that Graham Poole, that great friend of the bookies, decided to arrange another day at the races around about this time. The list has been on the board for some time now, and hopefully all those who put their names down have paid their bills.

Saturday, October 5, sees the big day, leaving from outside the Amusement Arcade, in Saundersfoot, at 9.15 am prompt. Please make sure that you are early. Graham tells me that timing is paramount, if you are late then you may find yourself walking to the races.
