SAD LOSS
All the enjoyment of lovely summer weather, with the green in great condition, meant nothing when the club heard of the sudden death of Brian Pritchard on Tuesday morning. The fact it was a couple of our own members who found him when they called to see if he was okay to play at bowls, made it all the more painful.
Brian was a character within the club, he seemed to have sixth sense when it came to smelling the tea pot brewing. His comments during the annual general meeting gave us all a laugh over the years.
The condolences of the club go to his family.
DIVISION TWO
ST. KATH'S 82 (2 pts)
ST. ISSELL'S 88 (12 pts)
Meetings between two teams over the years have proved to be close run things with plenty of excitement coupled with excellent bowling; this was to be no different.
Both teams had their chances to get a good lead on a marvellous green with terrific pace.
Dave Roberts' rink certainly took the hint and immediately picked up two five counts in the first two ends. After that they never looked like losing, despite slacking off somewhat near the end.
Dave Robb's rink plodded on, picking up shots to stay well clear, while John Dugmore's rink started slowly, but then picked up a gear and never looked back.
Once again Alan Brace's rink found themselves 12 shots adrift at tea, but try as they might, the magic that they had the previous game eluded them this time and they went down by 14 shots.
Rink scores (St. Issell's first, St. Kaths skips only):
J. Austin, D. Howells, J. Moffatt, J. Dugmore 23; R. Davies 20.
P. Bissell, D. Newton, M. Gouldingay, A. Brace 15; P. Collins 29.
D. Stokes, S. Arris, J. Shields, D. Roberts 27; R. Kingston 16.
B. Deeley, R. Kennion, R. Morgan, D. Robb 23; A. Robson 17.
BREWERS CUP
ST. BRIDES 61
CASTLE 107
The St. Brides players were looking forward to this return game, probably as the last time they met, the home lads recorded their first win.
However it was not to be a repeat performance, Castle gaining ample revenge with a powerful performance.
Once again in their favour the St. Brides lads gave of their all and are popular opponents because of their approach, enjoying their game, rather than worrying about the scores - plus they play with a smile on their faces, or are they grimaces of pain? No matter, John and Gwynfor are giving games to some who would not manage one otherwise.
Rink scores (St. Brides first, Castle skips only)
N. Griffiths, B. Berry, J. Davies, M. Brewer 14; J. M. Jones 25.
T. James, J. Bingham, T. Bullock, J. Lawrence 24; T. Chalmers 20.
N. Ruff, G. James, J. Cleaver, G. Davies 12; M. Hunt 31.
P. Lewis, D. Pope, D. Williams, J. Tombs 11; W. Hall 31.
ST. BRIDES 74 (4 pts)
ST. ISSELL'S 86 (10 pts)
The second meeting this season of these two club teams saw a determined St. Brides take the green with all guns blazing. The background sounds of the Cardiff Philarmonic practising for their concert later that night must have put the St. Issell's team into a dream state on certain rinks, either that or they wanted to give St. Brides a chance - but I would not mention that idea to the St. Brides players, it could prove dangerous!
Certainly John Lawrence's rink were showing their more experienced counterparts how the game should be played, while Alan Brace could have seen his opposite number Jim Davies and his rink far enough, as they picked up 11 shots over the last five ends to leave Alan stunned.
A smashing performance from St. Brides, who are beginning to settle down as a team.
Rink scores (St. Brides first) were as follows:
L. Allen, G. Davies, D. Williams, J. Tombs 11; D. Stokes, S. Arris, J. Shields, D. Roberts 31.
P. Lewis, G. James, J. Cleaver, J. Davies 25; P. Gray, D. Newton, M. Gouldingay, A. Brace 16.
L. Waters, B. Berry, P. Sampson, M. Brewer 11; J. Austin, D. Howells, H. Jones, J. Dugmore 25.
N. Griffiths, J. John, T. Bullock, J. Lawrence 27; B. Deeley, R. Kennion, M. Brace, D. Robb 14.
ST. BRIDES 6 (2 pts)
ST. THOMAS 123 (12 pts)
Pembrokeshire Financial Services, the club sponsors, may have had a double take looking at the score in this game. Certainly after the home team's performance the previous day against St. Issell's, hopes were high in the home camp of another shock result. It was a shock, but the wrong side received it.
Jim Davies had been on a high after his demolition of Alan Brace on the Saturday, but he had to sit back and accept a drubbing in this game from St. Thomas captain Hywel Davies.
Likewise, John Tombs could only applaud the skills of Lyndon Frayling's rink.
John Lawrence and Tony Bullock were another rink to come back to earth with a bump. After defeating club captain Dave Robb's rink the previous day with a convincing performance, it was their turn to suffer.
The only break in the clouds was the rink of Maurice Brewer, who enjoyed beating 'Bus' Jenkins' team.
Rink scores (St. Brides first, St. Thomas skips only):
N. Ruff, T. Shaw, B. Duckworth, J. Tombs 12; L. Frayling 32.
P. Lewis, J. Bingham, J. Cleaver, J. Davies 7; H. Davies 44.
T. James, G. Phillips, T. Bullock, J. Lawrence 18; R. Harries 25.
L. Waters, D. B. Berry, P. Sampson, M. Brewer 25; P. Jenkins 22.
DITCH WEEDING
Members are asked if they could spare say an hour one day to go round the ditch and 'de-weed'. Just do what you can and stick the weeds in the bin. Perhaps if your wood goes into the ditch during the game, you could pull out a couple of weeds as you bend to pick it up. All right, just an idea! Anyway, please help folks. This is a job we can all undertake - 'many hands make light work', as they say.
