TENBY Blues Festival has booked The Alabama 3 offshoot, 'Alabama 3 Unplugged' to headline its Saturday night main concert at De Valence, Tenby. Featuring acoustic stripped down versions of Alabama 3's songs, the line up is Robert Love (vocals) Devlin Love (vocals) Rock Freebase (guitar) and Harpo Strangelove (harmonica).
Brixton Cowboys Alabama 3 are one of the most joyous, righteous, provocative and inspirationally delinquent bands Britain has ever spawned. The use of their song, 'Woke Up This Morning' as the theme to America's hippest TV show of 1999, neurotic mafiosa series The Sopranos, accessed blanket exposure for the band in the US.
Signed to One Little Indian, their 1997 debut, Exile on Coldharbour Lane, was a groundbreaking work that effortlessly fused gospel, country, blues, and house music. Dubbed 'chemical country,' Alabama 3 broke down the barriers between line dancers and ravers. Album number two, La Peste, followed in 2000 and found the band in more muted form.
Again, the gospel-country-blues axis was there. Their last offering is simply called Outlaw and perhaps their best work yet. A more stripped down, melodic album than its predecessors, a superb mixture of tongue-in-cheek nobility and honest, heartfelt song writing.
It was however in 2003 that Alabama 3 took the unusual step of delivering a versions album. Last Train to Mashville Vol. 2 presenting the band's greatest moments in stripped down acoustic form, thus bringing their country blues heartbeat to the fore courtesy of guest appearances from the offshoot Alabama extravaganza, The Larry Love Showband, 'Alabama 3 Unplugged,'a side project of Larry Love and two other band members. It is this group who will be playing a special acoustic gig at Tenby Blues Festival in November, and is part of the series of UK shows the group are doing over the Autumn, in between writing and recording a new album with the full band line up, which will be released next year - not to be missed!
