Although weather forecasters are ruling out the chance of a white Christmas this year, at least there will be a yellow and green one in Sardis again. Volunteers of Sardis Parks and Gardens were wondering this winter whether they would be greeted by the annual sight of the daffodils on the grass verges that attract so much local and national attention to the village, as traditionally they have bloomed a few weeks before Christmas Day. "Many people walk through Sardis village and enjoy the wild life and flowers and sit on one of the benches and listen to the birdsong," said Sardis Parks and Gardens volunteer, Rosemary Irvine. "We noted that this year a group of 'Steps2Health' walkers hoped to see the daffodils on their charity trek which went through the village in early December, but the daffodils were only beginning to show a few leaves at that point. "We are happy to say that they are now in bloom, but are flowering about five weeks later than in 2004 and 2005. Perhaps the 'Steps2Health' group will walk through the village again and enjoy their colourful beauty at a time of year when the weather is often bleak and gloomy," she added. It is difficult to remember that six years ago the village had an air of neglect and it is thanks to all the volunteers of Sardis Parks and Gardens who give their time and energy to maintain its beauty, that it is the delightful place it is today. During the past year, grants have been obtained from the Sustainable Pembrokeshire Small Grant Scheme, Enviroment Wales Project Grants and Action Earth. It is thanks to these small awards that the scheme is able to continue and the volunteers can carry out the work needed, as every year there are many expenses, such as the maintenance of the grass cutters, insurance to pay for and plants to buy for the floral boxes. Sardis Parks and Gardens always welcome new volunteers and during the past year people who once lived in the village gave their help at a time when there was much to do. "We'd like to say a grateful thanks to everyone who has helped, to our sponsors, and all the people who pass the time of day in the village. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year from Sardis Parks and Gardens," concluded Rosemary.
