Manorbier United 1 St. Florence 4 After an excellent display, St. Florence were deserved winners in this local derby for the Third Division Cup. The Saints were up for it from the start and always looked the more likely winners, whereas the yellows appeared to be a bit shell-shocked playing on the big stage in front of a large crowd of spectators. The Saints started well in this match which was played at the Monkton Swifts ground. Endeavour turned into dividends as the Saints were rewarded with a goal when James Knight crossed the ball in for Adam Johns to score. Manorbier came back with a goal to equalise, after a period of pressure resulted in St. Florence conceding an own goal. The scores were not level for long, as straight from the restart Colin Bately blasted the ball past the Manorbier 'keeper to make it 2-1 and the Saints retained the one-goal advantage at half-time. In the second half, the Saints came out on top and wasted no chances, with star striker Scott Smith getting two goals to make it 4-1 and putting the game out of reach of Manorbier, who were reduced to nine men. A great performance from Saints 'keeper James Phillips and his back four of Mark Roberts, Barry Wolverson, Gareth Whittle and Martin Protheroe provided the backbone for cup glory. The midfield was also good, with solid performances from the two centre midfielders Jamie Roberts and Ben Blake. In addition, the two wingers Adam Johns and Colin Bately played well, creating lots of chances, and up front James Knight and Scott Smith were both outstanding. All three St. Florence substitutes were used, with Paul Davis, Brett Evans and Kurt Walsh all playing a part in lifting the cup when they came on. Despite a lacklustre performance by the Manorbier team, Simon Bolton played well in defence. The Saints just missed out on promotion this season, but have some silverware in the form of the cup. Next season, St. Florence hope to go one step further and will make a determined bid to obtain promotion to Division Two. Manorbier were disappointed with the result and their own below par display, but have some consolation in the knowledge that they will be playing in Division Two next season.
