Many people in Tenby and the surrounding area may have been forgiven for thinking that there had been a late night rally staged on the seaside resort's beaches, as they awoke yesterday (Thursday) morning to find many motor vehicles covered in sand.

However, it was down to a rare weather occurrence for this time of the year, which saw sand blown in from the Sahara Desert throughout the night being deposited on cars and houses.

"It was fine Saharan dust that blew in with the windy and rainy weather overnight, affecting the whole of Wales and southern England," explained a spokesperson from Pembrokeshire County Council. "We've received a lot of enquiries about it from people across the county and had it independently analysed. It's an occurrence that can sometimes happen during the summer, but not often during the winter months.

"It's completely harmless and if you've found any of the sand particles on your vehicle, all you need to do is wash it."
