Following a year of getting green fingers, last Friday saw Sageston CP School officially open its new garden and outdoor classroom. They are to be used to promote education for sustainable development within the school. Many trees have been planted to provide shade during the summer months and to give wildlife a haven for staff and pupils to observe and study. The outdoor classroom, called The Green House, was funded by a 'land for learning' grant. The 'land for learning' project aims to support schools in starting developing their grounds for outdoor learning with particular emphasis on enhancing biodiversity and using sustainable products. This helps schools plan for a sustainable future, which is one of the aims of the Welsh Assembly Government's Sustainable Development Fund. This fund is run locally by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority. The 'land for learning' project has added funding support from Countryside Council for Wales and Forestry Commision Wales. Sageston School would like to thank very many friends and businesses for their support, without whom the project would not have been the success it was. The school extends their gratitude to Mike Cummine from Mowlem for funding the trees, Trevor Roach from the National Botanic Gardens of Wales for designing the garden, Parsons Brinckerhoff, Bethan Cox biodiversity officer for Pembrokeshire, Phil Davies from Govan Estates, Kay and Richard Scourfield from Bartlett Engineering, Simon Gerson from The Slate Centre, Kenny Scourfield from Carew Quarries, Neil and Mike from Pembrokeshire Macinery Ring, and National Park ranger Tim Jones. Sageston School would also like to thank all of the parents and friends of the school who gave up so much time and effort in the preparation of the school grounds.
