Road closures are to be considered for the 2025 Saundersfoot Triathlon, amid safety concerns relating to large crowds. Given the scale and popularity of the event – with 6,000–7,000 people attending – County councillor for the seaside village’s south ward Cllr Chris Williams has contacted Pembrokeshire County Council and the organisers to formally propose full road closures during the event.
The Saundersfoot Tri will take place on Friday, September 19, on the eve of Ironman Wales that takes place in Tenby and the surrounding area that Sunday.
“Since moving from an early Saturday morning start to a Friday evening 5pm start, this event has truly captured the imagination of both local businesses and residents,” said Cllr Williams.
“The village comes alive with a carnival atmosphere throughout the day, as thousands of people descend on Saundersfoot to take part, spectate, or simply soak up the atmosphere.
“Car parks are full to capacity and the sports field quickly fills to demand. Businesses have reported a notable increase in trade, with the café culture, live music and licenced venues contribute to a fantastic community spirit.
“Many local residents are among the competitors, while others line the streets to support friends, family, or simply cheer on the athletes.
“This event has become a much-loved part of the Saundersfoot calendar – and I am very much a supporter of it,” continued Cllr Williams who said that he was arranging a meeting with PCC and event organisers with a view to road closures at - Wogan Terrace; High Street; Cambrian Terrace, and The Strand for the duration of the event.
“Last year’s triathlon took place on open roads, but due to the high numbers of both competitors and spectators, I believe a vehicle-free environment is essential to ensure safety and enhance the experience for all,“ continued Cllr Williams.
“It is not acceptable to have athletes running or cycling down Wogan Terrace while vehicles are pulling out from the High Street.
“We also have a live working harbour junction, from Cambrian Terrace and Brewery Terrace, mixing bikes and foot traffic along with commercial and private vehicles sharing this busy entrance route with athletes and spectators.
“I’ve already discussed this with Councillor Alec Cormack, who fully supports the proposed road closures. I will be requesting that PCC also consult with local residents, Dyfed-Powys Police, local landowners and businesses in the village.
“The recent incident at an event in Liverpool has intensified scrutiny on event safety nationwide. It is now more important than ever that we put safety at the heart of all local event planning. While not every event requires full road closures, this one does – given the scale, the number of attendees, and the logistics involved.
“I will continue to work with PCC to ensure every safety consideration is taken seriously and that both residents and businesses are informed and consulted. This is a fantastic event for Saundersfoot, and with the right safety measures in place, it can continue to grow in popularity and benefit the community for years to come,” he added.
