Coastguards have been praised by a local family this week after they helped rescue their pet dog from the bottom of a 180-foot cliff at the weekend.

Nine-year-old 'Hooch', a Jack Russell-cross, his owners Steve and Heather Hilling, of Lady Park, Tenby, along with their other dog, had been out walking along the Lydstep headland on Saturday afternoon, when 'Hooch' found his way down a 90-foot steep slope, before plunging another 90-foot off the edge of the cliff into the sea below.

'Hooch' managed to swim approximately six feet to nearby rocks, before scrambling ashore.

He was rescued by coastguard cliffman, Mark Rice, who was lowered down to him and brought him safely back to the top of the headland.

Although shocked, 'Hooch' at first appeared unharmed by the incident, but sadly the rescue turned to sadness 24 hours later when he passed away as a result of his injuries.

"The coastguards were absolutely brilliant and we cannot thank them enough for what they did, but it was not meant to be," Mrs. Hilling told the Observer afterwards.
