Although Whitland's winning streak came to an end at the hands of Bonymaen at Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn on Saturday, the result was overshadowed by the sudden death of former Borderers captain Dennis James whilst watching the game.
Mr. James, who was 79, had turned out as usual to cheer on his beloved Green and Whites from the stand when he collapsed just after the interval.
He received treatment, including mouth to mouth resuscitation from three members of the Whitland ladies committee who are qualified nurses, before an ambulance arrived to take him to hospital.
He received further treatment en route, but all attempts to revive him were sadly to no avail.
Play was held up while Mr. James was conveyed to the ambulance and the tragedy cast a cloud over the rest of the match, with the Borderers finding it difficult to concentrate following the lost of such a valued clubman.
With both sides marshalling their defences well, it was Bonymaen who took an early lead in the sixth minute when centre James Davies slotted over a penalty.
Although Borderers stand-off Daniel Griffiths raised hopes with a darting 50-metre run, the homesters were denied second phase at the breakdown.
Scoring opportunities on both sides were restricted by controlled defence, before quick thinking by Whitland at a tap penalty netted them the first try just seven minutes from the change around.
The ball was fed out to Griffiths who in turn angled a long pass out to Daniel Rogers, who sucked in the Bonymaen cover before sending wing Andrew Richards cantering over for an unconverted touchdown.
The score fired Bonymaen who upped the pressure on Whitland. Desperate defending by the Green and Whites saw prop Romeo Colella commit a yellow card offence, with James Davies punishing the indiscretion by firing over the resultant penalty to give the visitors a one point interval lead.
Although reduced to 14 men, with Colella still sidelined serving out the remainder of his sinbin time after the oranges, Whitland snatched back the lead when Griffiths was on target with a penalty.
Another three-pointer from Davies saw the advantage swing Bonymaen's way again 10 minutes later, although the centre was off target with another penalty to increase the lead further just four minutes later.
However, he fared better just 10 minutes from the end when he added the extras to a well-taken try by visiting lock Andrew Llewellyn to effectively end the match as a contest.
Tomorrow (Saturday), Whitland have another home game, this time welcoming Bedwas to Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn.
