Dozens of young rugby stars did battle on the golden sands of Newgale. Primary school squads from all over Pembrokeshire flocked to a Scarlets Beach Fives event on July 15. School squads at the five-hour special included Wdig, Llangwm, Roch, Prendergast, Stackpole, Tenby and Haverfordwest. The popular tournaments have become a permanent feature of the sporting calendar over the past few years, with fun, skill, competitiveness and companionship the main aims. Winning teams in each one-day competition receive medals and a trophy. The competition was a five-a-side touch rugby competition, with each squad of 10 having to contain at least two girls. They take packed lunches, the Scarlets offer refreshments donated by Tesco and the players enjoy a full day of rugby from around 10 am - 3 pm. The Tenby squad of Dylan Rees, Spencer Williams, Ben Roberts, James Brace, Declan Escott, Luke Hartland, Daniel Evans, Richard Lewis, Polly Scotcher and Rachelle Vickery amassed a total of 46 tries and conceded only one as they breezed to victory against Stackpole, Llangwm, Prendergast and Haverfordwest VC School. It certainly was an enjoyable day and the children were delighted to finally win a rugby tournament this year, having gained runners-up spot in both of the other Pembrokeshire tournaments. Well done boys and good luck next year! The beach fives are part of the Scarlets community programme sponsored by Link Telecom and Sportsmatch.
