The Rotary Club of Narberth and Whitland organised a Stroke Awareness Day in Narberth recently when shoppers were offered the opportunity of having their blood pressure checked.

Rotarians in the town's High Street explained the purpose of the service to passers-by and those who accepted the offer were directed to the nearby schoolroom at Bethesda Baptist Church where Sister Jane Allen and Sister Jane Howe from the local health centre were on hand to measure blood pressures and offer advice.

The event was a huge success and nearly 50 people took advantage of the service.

Although high blood pressure (hypertension) is the single biggest risk factor for a stroke, most people are unaware they have the condition because often there are no symptoms associated with it.

So it proved at Narberth since several people were surprised to learn that they did indeed have hypertension and were advised to have the condition investigated further through their GP.

Afterwards, June John, a member of the Inner Wheel Club of Narberth and Whitland, very kindly provided tea, coffee and biscuits to the thankful 'customers'.

"We are very grateful to June and to both nurses for giving up their time to help us and also to Rev. Chris Rees for the use of the Chapel Room," said Rotarian Jean Watson who arranged the event with her Rotary colleagues.

"Like other Rotary Clubs throughout the country, we offer this service annually and, because of its success, we are considering repeating it in other areas around Narberth and Whitland during the year," she said.
