THE Paul Harris Fellowship is Rotary's highest award and it is given only to those who have made outstanding contributions to the Rotary movement. A rare event took place at a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Narberth and Whitland in that the recipient was not a Rotarian. Robert Newsome has, however, been an honorary Rotarian for many years and his contribution to Rotary was recognised when he was presented with this prestigious award by president Robert Elward. President Rob said that Mr. Newsome, headteacher at Ysgol Gyfun Dyffryn Taf, Whitland, had been a good friend of the Rotary Club of Narberth and Whitland for many years. He said: "We value that friendship and are grateful to you for help you have given us over the years. We are particularly grateful for the many fund- raising evenings you have organised on behalf of the club, but we also recognise that our involvement in the school is entirely due to your enthusiastic welcome of our efforts." Responding, Robert Newsome said that the school benefited greatly from its association with the club. "We very much appreciate the relationship we have with the Rotary Club and recognise the contribution that Rotarians make. The young musician, public speaking and young chef competitions are much appreciated by all those who participate," said Mr. Newsome "The sixth form interviews conducted by Rotarians make a valuable contribution in helping pupils about to embark upon further education courses," he added. "We are also proud that our pupils actively support Rotary principles by participating in the activities of the interact club which exists in the school," he said. The award was met with enthusiastic approval by the Rotarians who were present to witness this special occasion.
