Tenby Rotarian Stephen Williams set himself three goals recently.
The first was to lose three-stone and get fit, the second to raise £3,000 and the final goal was to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Fifty-seven-year-old Stephen has just returned from Tanzania after successfully reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro, which he did to raise money for the Fisherman's Mission, and so far he has raised over £3,000 for the mission.
Stephen's certificate from the Tanzania National Park shows that he was the 111,500 person to reach Uhuru Peak.
"I know it's a lot of people before me, but every single one of them deserved it, as it was one of the most physically challenging and mentally exhausting things I have ever done," said Stephen.
The 10-day trek took the group of eight fund-raisers up one of the most difficult routes of Kilimanjaro, 'The Machame Route' - known as the Whisky Trail, because it's a "touch of the hard stuff" -which came as a bit of a surprise to Stephen who had been informed that they would be going up the easy route!
It was not until the group, who came from all over the UK, met up at Heathrow Airport that the organiser informed them of the change.
The trek involved covering over 60 miles and camping in sub-zero temperatures, and climbing the equivalent to Snowdon every day for six consecutive days to reach the 5,895-metre peak of the highest free-standing mountain in the world.
On the summit day, the team set off at midnight and arrived at the top at 8.40 am. The temperature was -17 and with only 50 per cent oxygen, it was very difficult for the group, who did not stop until they reached the base camp at approximately 8 pm in the evening.
"We were trekking for almost 18 hours straight, but it was an incredible lifetime experience," said Stephen, who would like to thank the Tenby Rotary Club and Round Table who let him sell raffle tickets at their summer events, and the traders and the people of Tenby for their generosity in sponsoring him in his quest.
Winner of the raffle was Mrs. Tish Rossiter, who won a week's holiday donated by Kiln Park Holidays.
