Registration for the races was brisk but in the capable hands of Jayne Hughes, Barbara Pegg and Jan Evans all went smoothly.
The square had been decorated by the crew and each race was hotly contested. Indeed we may have to introduce heats next year if the numbers continue to increase.
From the moment the buzzer sent them on their way, the runners were flipping their pancakes and flying along Tudor Square which was alive with cheering and laughter.
The event even had more adult entrants this year but there’s a challenge for next year to resurrect the ‘chefs race’.
Once again the crew race proved a worthy climax to the event with young Dylan John, son of coxswain Phil John giving the big boys a run for their money, just being pipped to the post by Ieuan.
Well done to President Shan Thomas and Althea Shaw for hanging on to the finishing tape despite the advancing hordes!
Nothing went to waste as the seagulls had a fine time with the dropped pancakes!
There were prizes for the winners, courtesy of Oakwood, Heatherton and Rolly’s Fudge but each participant received a mini chocolate egg, so no-one went away disappointed.
Although there was plenty of local entrants taking part, it was good to see people from other parts of Wales, and England, all enjoying the half-term fun.
Thanks must go to coxswain Phil John and his crew for all their help, to the committee for their efforts, and to the Baytree for allowing the organisers to gather there, and fuelling them with coffee before the start.
Altogether a sum of £348.15 was raised for the RNLI while having lots of fun. What better way to spend a sunny Tuesday morning .
It is hard to believe that it was nine years ago when Jo Thomas came up with the idea of Pancake Races and she has been the driving force behind the idea ever since.
The committee would like to thank her for her efforts, particularly in getting such great prizes.
Next year will be the tenth Annual RNLI Pancake Race and plans are already being made to ensure that it will be even more spectacular. Watch this space!
