Two RNLI intrepid crew members have volunteered for a seven-hour 'water ride-athon' at Oakwood Theme Park on Monday, June 16, (with a special test run on Monday, June 9). Full-time mechanic Ben Billingham and RNLI volunteer Ceri Knapgate from New Quay's RNLI lifeboat station will be embarking on the marathon attempt at the Aspro-owned attraction in a bid to raise vital funds for the national lifeboat charity. The pair will be splitting their time between the park's three different water-based rides over a seven-hour period. Oakwood manager John Doona said: "The RNLI is a wonderful charity and we were only too pleased to get involved when Ben and Ceri approached us. "As the boys spend so much of their time on the sea, we thought that dividing their challenge between our three main water-based rides would make them feel more at home. "I understand they're planning to bring their wet weather gear and, with them spending seven hours getting soaked, I think they'll need it!" he added. Ben and Ceri will divide their time between three rides spending two-and-a-half hours on both Waterfall and Snake River Falls before completing their challenge with a 120-minute ride on Hydro. Bev Rosser-Smith, RNLI area fundraising manager, said: "I have seen people do some weird and wonderful things to raise funds for the RNLI charity over the years - but this really is one of the craziest! "Ben and Ceri are hoping to raise £1,000, which is enough to train one crew member for a year. The funds they raise will go towards the RNLI's 'Train One, Save Many' campaign which funds the continuous training of RNLI lifeboat crews and lifeguards. "As RNLI crew, Ben and Ceri realise how vital training is to ensure they can go to sea and save lives, but that training comes at a cost. With only one in 10 crew members joining the RNLI with a professional maritime occupation, training is more vital than ever. The RNLI is thrilled they have come up with this exciting challenge and wish them all the very best." RNLI fundraisers and larger-than-life mascot Stormy Stan will be collecting at Oakwood during the launch of the challenge on June 9, and will also be present to cheer on the brave duo on June 16.
