On Wednesday afternoon, the Ridgeway Local History group enjoyed an outing to the Italian POW camp at Henllan (writes R.G.). In 1942/3, the prisoners had made a chapel in one of their huts and a young man with no formal training in painting produced the most amazing art work.
We were stunned at the ingenuity - nothing was what it appeared. 'Marble' was wood covered by painted cement bags and candle sticks were fashioned from tin cans. The colours for the beautiful painting of the Last Supper are still fresh after 70 years and they were produced from flowers, leaves, tea leaves - almost anything except a Dulux colour chart.
The prisoners worked on local farms where they were shown such kindness that friendships between the families continue to the present time.
Keeping to a theme we then enjoyed a splendid meal at 'La Calabra'. Our sincere thanks to Felicity Kleen for organising this.
Our next two outings are on May 29, at 7 pm, at Orielton Field Study Centre and on July 3, at 3 pm, when we visit the Spitfire Museum at Withybush.
