A campaign has been launched this week against the siting of a telecommunications mast in a South Pembrokeshire village. Concerned about the health risks posed by being exposed to microwave radiation emitted from the structure, residents in Gumfreston have formed an action committee to fight the proposal by Airwave mm02 Limited to erect a Tetra mast on land at Gumfreston Farm. At a meeting on Monday night, the residents formed the 'Gumfreston against the Tetra mast' group in a bid to oppose the application for the temporary installation for no longer than 12 months of a 10m high pole to support telecommunications apparatus and ancillary equipment. "We are very alarmed at the news of this proposal," chairman of the newly-formed group, Gordon Ellis, told the Observer. "We have heard many reports about Tetra and the effects it has had on the health of people living near them," he said. "When a Tetra mast was switched on in Dursley, Gloucestershire, people reported being 'shocked' and being woken up to 15 times a night. "They also suffered migraines, sleeplessness and nose bleeds, none of which they had experienced before the mast was erected. "We feel that everyone in the area should be made aware of this application, especially as we have a number of schools and a residential care home, all within close proximity of the proposed site." As a result, members of the campaign group have been delivering leaflets to houses within a one-mile radius informing people of the application and warning them of the possible health risks. In addition, the group is writing to St. Florence Community Council, the local MP, AM and MEP, as well as the chief executive of Pembrokeshire County Council, Mr. Bryn Parry Jones, with their objections to the scheme. A petition is also being planned. When contacted by the Observer, a spokesman for Pembrokeshire County Council confirmed that they had received an application for the site and as a result had written to all residents within a 250-metre radius informing them of the plan and seeking their comments. The Observer also contacted Airwave mm02 Limited, but no-one was available for comment. The 'Gumfreston against the Tetra mast' group were due to meet again last night (Thursday), to review the campaign and discuss further action.
