Last Saturday's destination was Llysyfran Country Park, or Crow Palace Country Park according to one possible rendering of the Welsh name. Demand for places on the minibus was so high that an extra bus was organised and filled. So by 11 o'clock a full 33 Steps2Health members were gathered outside the Visitor Centre on a cool overcast day. Despite the weather, everyone was cheerful and looking forward to the walk. After the usual pre-walk briefing, Paul led the faster group clockwise around the lake supported by Brian. Val, Erica and Janice were soon following behind with the Steady Eddies. The Steady Eddies kept to the main path, while the Speedy group weaved in and out of the fishing lawns. So the two groups became intermingled from time to time and a couple of walkers quietly swapped from one group to the other. Very soon everyone was feeling nice and warm and enjoying the tranquility that is the essence of this country park. The fishermen and women were not having much luck at that time, so they weren't disturbing the peace. A Great Tit singing in a tree was the only sound to be heard over the chat of the walkers. The violets and campion were delightful, but the showy bluebells overwhelmed their charm with a veritable carpet in some places. At the one mile post, the Steady Eddies turned around and headed back to the Visitor Centre and refreshments. The Speedies pressed on to the bridge before they, too, headed back for a well-deserved cup of tea or coffee. On the way back a group of geese flew up from the reservoir briefly disturbing the peace. Then the fish started biting, so excited fishermen could be heard calling for landing nets, as they hauled thrashing silver trout from the water. At the Visitor Centre café our numbers were swelled by some non-walking members of the club. The staff did us proud and everyone was quickly served with drinks and snacks. As we were leaving the café to return to our minibuses, our final entertainment of the morning arrived. This took the form of a cavalcade of tractors coming into the park from who knows where. After much waving and a fair few photographs, we set off on the journey home. As we came close to Tenby, the quiet calm became just a memory as we heard ever more of the exuberant popping exhausts of this year's scooter rally. Tomorrow (Saturday) meet outside Sainsbury's for a 10.30 start. Brian will be leading a town walk. Refreshments will be at St. Johns Church Hall at a coffee morning raising funds for Christian Aid.
