One of Tenby’s county councillors has held talks with the Police and Crime Commissioner for Dyfed-Powys, calling for more of a police presence across the seaside town and its surrounding locality.

Incidents of anti-social behaviour have been rising in the resort of late, most recently the discovery of further offensive graffiti on the sea defence walls of the North Beach, and earlier this month vandalism to some of the town’s High Street festive decorations around St Mary’s Church, along with a bus shelter near to the multi-storey car park being smashed.

The town's train station has also been targeted by vandalism in recent months.

Subsequently, county councillor for Tenby’s North Ward, Cllr Michael Williams has held talks with Dyfed-Powys Police Commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn.

“Following reports of the general decline in behaviour and vandalism, I met with the Police Commissioner Mr Dafydd Llywellyn and he is meeting with me together with Councillor Paul Rapi of Tenby Town Council, and Cllr Rhys Jordan [St Mary Out Liberty/St Florence county councillor], in Tenby hopefully before Christmas, which will enable us to outline the recent issues of anti-social behaviour as well as other local concerns,” stated Cllr Williams.

“I am concerned about the lack of Police visibility in the area, and I hope that this can be addressed. It appears that Tenby Police station has been downgraded and is locked most of the time. This is not acceptable.

“I do understand that Police resources were dramatically reduced in recent years, but my understanding is that thanks to the efforts of the Commissioner, officers are now being recruited. I hope this will be reflected by an increase in officers patrolling our streets,” he added.

The spate of vandalism was condemned by Tenby’s south ward county councillor Sam Skyrme-Blackhall, who remarked: “I am really annoyed at this. What possesses people? At this time of year with the wet and cold, some people really need the shelters as they wait for a bus.

“How would these vandals feel if it were their elderly relative getting wet because of them...or do they just not care?” she continued.

“As for the Christmas Trees, I just think it is petty and mindless. We are trying to make the town look nice and these idiots think it is fun to cause damage. I hope Santa decides not to visit them this year!”

“Police are advising that if they witness any suspicious behaviour please contact and report to 101,” she added.

Cllr Jordan has also raised issues regarding anti-social behaviour in the town that neighbours his ward, stating: “I do have concerns about the volume of young people using the multi-story car park as a ‘hang out’ - but it’s unsurprising when there seems to be very little for young people to do in their spare time.”
