At last Friday's Senior Welsh Boxing Finals held at the Welsh Institute of Sport in Cardiff, Narberth's John Phillips, a prolific referee, officiated at his 21st final.

His first one was way back in 1982, over a quarter of a century ago - a remarkable record and certainly a post-war record for Wales.

This year alone, he has refereed almost 100 bouts and is fast closing on a remarkable 11,000 bouts since he started in 1973 - a record very few would have achieved in the world, let alone in Wales.

As OIC of West Wales, he is now extremely busy going to all the shows and championships and internationals, both home and abroad, and as he is known as 'Mr. Boxing', still has to answer many questions on the sport.

Throughout his prolific career in boxing and visiting all the great arenas around the world, what pleases him most is the club shows he visits up and down his beloved Wales.

This is where the grass roots of boxing starts and which many of our great champions down the years have benefited from.

Boxing is still the safest of all sports, as amateur boxing is rigorously looking after our boxers aged 10 upwards.

Before the season closes at the end of May, John will have refereed many more bouts. He has already attended almost 1,500 shows around the world and by the end of May, he will have attended many more. This is an extremely busy life, but one he enjoys.
