Carmarthen Athletic 29 pts. Whitland 18

Carmarthen Athletic completed the double over Whitland by 29 points to 18 with a deserved win at home and claimed the bonus point in this Swalec League Division One West clash on Saturday.

The Borderers did contribute to their own downfall, however, with some ill-discipline and lack of thought in defence not helping their cause against their local rivals.

Carmarthen, playing down the slope and with the wind in the first half, ran in three tries through winger Dai Jenkins, centre and captain Steve Davies and scrum-half Aled Thomas, with outside-half Steffan Rees converting all three of them.

Whitland's points came from outside-half Carwyn Jones with a penalty and a converted try after good work by Ryan Michael to leave the half-time score 21 points to 10 in Carmarthen's favour.

Two mintues into the second half, Carwyn Jones cut Carmarthen's lead with a penalty, but with Whitland having a period of good pressure, the game was turned on its head by one decision from referee Elwyn Marfell-Jones.

After 18 minutes, when Ryan Michael took a quick tap penalty, he only made five metres before being tackled. Nevertheless, play was allowed to continue, enabling Carmarthen to turn the ball over and drive up field. When the ball went to ground, Whitland scrum-half Gary Davies was adjudged to have come in from the side and, as well as conceding a penalty, he also received a yellow card.

So instead of the Borderers gaining an extra 10 metres and cutting Carmarthen's lead to five points, they found themselves 11 points behind after fullback Mark Williams kicked the subsequent penalty.

And furthermore, to rub salt into the wound, during the sinbinning, Carmarthen also went on to score an unconverted try by winger Rhys Lewis.

Whitland did add to their own score with an unconverted try by Carwyn Jones, who bagged all 18 of his side's points..

There were good performances from Alan Proctor in the scrum, fellow prop Gareth Lloyd, not only in the set-piece, but in his all round play, back row forwards Gareth Downs and Ryan Michael and outsidehalf Carwyn Jones, while, as ever, captain and number eight Randall Williams gave his all, but the whole squad must reflect on their preformances of late and step up and be counted in the coming weeks.

The first half was a particularly close affair and Aberystwyth were well in the game at at 15 points to seven.

The dominance of the yooung Borderers showed in the second half, however, as they scored four tries and 26 unanswered points, to win comfortably by 41 points to seven.
