Next week (June 16 - 22) is National Glass Week and Pembrokeshire County Council is encouraging everyone to recycle glass containers.

The aim of 'Glass Week' is to encourage everyone to choose products packaged in glass, for example jars and bottles, and to recycle as much of their glass as possible.

The theme for the week is the 'Glass promise.' Many personalities, including Fiona Phillips and Joanna Lumley, have already made a promise to use as much glass as possible and to recycle all the glass they use during National Glass Week.

Pembrokeshire County Council's waste strategy officer, Jill Jack, said: "Everyone can play an active part in recycling glass containers, such as jars and bottles, at the Civic Amenity/Recycling Centres or the Bring Sites in Pembrokeshire.

"Not only does this reduce the amount of rubbish that goes to landfill, but it also helps to save energy and preserve our countryside."

There are six Civic Amenity Sites/Recycling Centres in Pembrokeshire that have facilities to recycle glass and other recyclables.

Alternatively, there are over 70 Bring Sites within the county. These sites are located mainly in major supermarkets, car parks, public house car parks and in the heart of rural communities.

Jill continued: "It is important that we not only recycle as much glass as possible, but also other household items such as cans, newspapers and magazines.

"If we are going to see any real changes, and improvements to the environment, everyone should be encouraged to make recycling a way of life and not just a one-off activity."

Below are some simple guidelines to recycling your glass:

• Only deposit glass containers such as bottles and jars. Containers which hold food, pharmaceutical and household items are recyclable as well as beer and wine bottles.

• Never deposit window glass, light bulbs, pyrex or visionware cooking containers and remove any bottle caps and corks.

• At the bottle bank, separate clear, brown and green glass and place it into appropriate bottle banks. Place your blue bottles in the green bottle bank.

• Although efforts are made to empty all the banks regularly, if you find the bottle bank is full, telephone the Pembrokeshire Service Line 0845 6021386.
