They say the sun shines on the righteous, but I reckon Oliver Duckett must have done some serious praying on Thursday night to have such glorious weather on his Captains Day! Forty-eight young juniors turned out last Friday, which must be a record number for Tenby Golf Club, and everyone from six to 17 enjoyed an excellent day's golf.
The Junior captain very generously provided refreshment and nourishment for the youngsters before venturing out on the course and Mr. Ted Martin saw the youngsters on their way by announcing from the tee. He must be congratulated for his swift movement between tees!
White and red box medal competitors went off first, followed by yellow stableford players and black box juniors. The sight was marvellous to see, with the captain being very fortunate and leading them all out! Thanks to excellent support from members and parents, an adult to keep them going over the nine and six holes, accompanied the young rangers. The juniors were really grateful for all the input they received from the adults, and some of the adults managed to learn a few things as well on the way round - some of whom suffered from earache by the time they got back!
As well as a round of golf, the juniors competed in a putting competition, with some of the younger golfers showing the older boys how it's done, including the adults!
Sam Morgan took the sub junior boys' prize, with Sam Christopher second. Richard Morton won the junior prize, with Holly Watkins taking second place.
The adults were also challenged to take up the putting, with some blaming the tools rather than their performance! The winner, although not announced on the afternoon, was Mrs. Gillian Roberts, who will receive her prize soon!
After the golf, the children had a meal and this was followed by the presentation of prizes. Oliver thanked the competitors for supporting him on his day, as well as the green staff, members of the club, Roger, Ria and bar staff, parents and the junior organisers.
He presented Ian and Julia with two beautifully framed watercolours generously donated by David Morgan and family, of High Seas Gallery.
The overall gross winner for the day was Holly Watkins, who played out of her skin, though the junior captain might feel it was his inspiration! She scored a 76 gross that led to a reduction in her handicap yet again! Runner-up was Dan Cope, with third place going to vice-captain Niclas Thomas.
The best net went to David Schooling who has just transferred to white tees and is obviously feeling quite at home as he had an excellent 64. Rachel Scourfield also played really well and as runner-up had a net 67, with David Ayers in third place.
The stableford competition brought in some excellent scores, Andrew Evans yet again playing another game of his life, with a wonderful 40 points. Darren Taylor took second place and Aled Griffiths third.
The juniors who played nine holes also scored well, with Jonathan Evans winning first prize; his gross over nine holes was 40! This boy will certainly go far in the future. Runner-up was Joseph Llama and third spot went to Hywel Lloyd.
Jason Regimbal, a newcomer to the game, won the six-hole competition, with Greg Lees Griffiths coming second in his first ever competition. Hugo Wellum and David Webb both shared third spot.
The captain presented everyone with a golf ball.
The day finished with Claudio producing an excellent show of his golf tricks that had the juniors star struck! In fact, I've never witnessed such silence! Oliver took up the challenge of trying out some of the tricks performed by Claudio and did well, but he noted that Claudio had been working hard at his performance and some of the tricks were a little too much!
A big thank you to Julian and Linda Thomas for providing vouchers for the prize winners.
Another successful event at Tenby Golf Club for the juniors, the future of Tenby Golf Club.
The Haf Cup is now in full swing, with the results from Junior Captains Day entered in for your first eclectic. Whenever you go out, competition or for fun, write down your score on one of the eclectic cards and I will enter your score on the holes you have bettered.
If you didn't play on Captain's Day you can still enter by putting in a card from another competition. All the sheets are up in the junior room to record your progress.
