Several ingredients are necessary in order to produce a successful fund-raising event: the venue, what's on offer, and the people.

This was exactly the case last week when Carew and Cresswell Quay committee held a 'Cawl and Pudding' morning to raise money for Cancer Research. The venue was the village hall in Lawrenny, a perfect setting on an early spring morning, hot, nourishing, meaty cawl and puddings to die for, and of course a full complement of people.

It had been decided this year to do something a little different from the usual Easter coffee morning, and so the cawl and pudding morning evolved.

Carol had prepared and worked tirelessly to produce cawl to her normal high standard and all agreed that it was very tasty (and very filling!)

The puddings were made by various committee members and looked most professional. They proved so popular that people were asking to buy extras to take home.

Everyone was amazed at the variety of desserts on offer and how delicious they were (absolutely no good for the waistline though!).

A raffle was held, and the winners announced at the end of the morning. A mixed hamper went to Vi Patterson, a voucher for Milton Farmshop was won by Ann Cole, 'Wobbles' won the whiskey, Enid Scourfield went home with an orchid, Netty and Jane and Tim Davies won toiletries. Biscuits were won by Paula Ralph and Pauline Pugh, Janet Cole won an Easter egg, there was a mystery prize which was won by Meryl Rowan and, finally, a bottle of wine was won by Jean Smith. Thanks go to all those who kindly donated the prizes.

Many thanks to everyone involved for their hard work and to all who sponsored the event. A total of £628.40 was raised during the morning, proof indeed that if you put on the right sort of event, and the ingredients are all in place, it will be a success.
