There is no shortage of books which have been and are being adapted for the small - or large - screen! In addition to the likes of Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, there's the recent film Millions from Frank Cottrell Boyce's award-winning novel, the forthcoming screen version of Anthony Horowitz's first Alex Rider novel Stormbreaker (out on July 21), or thefuture film of Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl. There are the fantastic novels to accompany the new Doctor Who series, television versions of classics such as The Borrowers and Tom's Secret Garden, or more recently, Nicky Singer's novel Feather Boy... The list is endless. It's no surprise therefore that the idea for the theme for this year's annual reading event came from the pupils themselves. Several hundred young people from 13 schools across the county joined up for 'Reading Charades 2006' and read their way through six books, miming their favourite at the end to complete the challenge. Thanks to ChevronTexaco, without whose sponsorship the annual challenge could not take place, all participants who completed the challenge received a special 'Reading Charades' certificate to go with their log card. All pupils completing the challenge had the chance to win prizes of vouchers, tickets and books in the county prize draw. Prize-winners gathered at a special presentation at Scolton Manor on Wednesday, June 28, to receive their prizes from author and editor with Gomer Press, Viv Sayer. The organisers are grateful to generous sponsorship of prizes from Ocky White, Pembroke Bookshop, Heatherton, Victoria Bookshop, Folly Farm, the Welsh Books Council, Castell Henllys, the West Wales Children's Book Group and the Dinosaur Park, Tenby.
