THE RNLI is calling on Welsh adrenaline junkies to join them for a tandem 10,000 ft parachute jump, at the only skydiving venue in Wales. The lifesaving charity has teamed up with Skydive Swansea to organise the exhilarating two-day 'Skydiveathon' which will take place on August 9 and 10. Participants are asked to raise at least £300 in sponsorship - £100 of which will go to the RNLI. Donations will go towards the RNLI's train one, save many campaign which raises funds for the vital lifesaving training of volunteer RNLI lifeboat crews and lifeguards. The Swansea 'Skydiveathon' will involve 30 minutes of ground training, followed by a tandem parachute jump attached to a qualified tandem instructor. At an altitude of up to 10,000ft, divers will exit the aircraft and experience a thrilling 30-seconds of freefall followed by an exhilarating canopy ride, taking in the sights of Swansea bay. Divers can sign up now to join in the fun of jumping with other RNLI supporters at the 'Skydiveathon' when there will be additional attractions at the airfield to keep participants and their supporters amused throughout the day. Anyone who signs up to the weekend will receive a commemorative t-shirt of the event, as well as a goody bag to take away. For those who can't attend on August 9/10, there is also the option to jump for the RNLI most other weekends throughout the year. Tamsin Davies, RNLI senior fund-raising manager, said: "The RNLI is delighted to have the support of Skydive Swansea in arranging this rare opportunity for people to enjoy the thrill of skydiving in Wales, while raising money for charity. The event is suitable for groups and individuals alike, but places are limited, so we would urge anyone interested to sign up now and help raise funds towards the RNLI's train one, save many campaign. "The RNLI has 31 lifeboat stations around the Welsh coast and has to constantly fund the training of 700 volunteer lifeboat crew who are on call 24/7 to respond to emergencies. Training is the magic ingredient which turns RNLI volunteers into lifesavers, but that training comes at a cost of £1,000 per crew member, every year."
