As soon as one agricultural show or equine event is over, the hard working committee set about organising the next, taking due note of ways in which the schedule may be improved or expanded, the timing of classes and the lay-out of the site. The books have to be balanced, sponsorship and membership subs got in and the whole ritual repeated year on year. Then again comes around the final few days, all the judges have accepted and the stewards are aware of their tasks and everyone listens to the weather forecast... in hope of a fine day. Last weekend, the Martletwy YFC committee must have been in a state of despair for, of all days, Wednesday was going to be the one day in the week with gale force winds and driving rain. Dawned the day and, true to form, the rain came down in torrents, but the marquees, fortunately, held firm in the winds. But all was not lost. By mid- morning the first inkling of blue skies began to appear and, despite running about an hour late, the show enjoyed a truly glorious afternoon. The majority of the livestock exhibitors had arrived on time but, perhaps, the terrible forecast may have deterred many holidaymakers from visiting this popular rural attraction. In the judging rings, Sarah Whitfield took supreme in the horse and pony section, with Bethan Simon superbly riding the nine-year-old bay Hunter, Penskyber Manhatten. Heading the beef cattle entries were the James family with their winning Welsh Black, the two- year-old heifer Hafren Ceinlys and in the dairy section, Jenny, daughter of Mark and Eluned Davies proudly led the winning Shorthorn, the in-calf fourth calver Chicklade Wildeyes 36. Businessman Jim Jones was equally delighted to take best from the sheep pens with his two-year- old Texel ram and went on to win the inter-breed group of three. Zina Saunders was again successful with her Boxer dog, Lewis, to take Best in Show, and in the horticultural marquee, Georgina Hughes gained most points in the vegetable and flower classes, and Lauren Arthur did likewise in the children's section. Chairman, Roy Hughes, was delighted that after such a dismal start the day had turned out so well and he praised everyone involved for the splendid teamwork throughout. Officials: chairman - Roy Hughes; vice-chairman - Terry Clarke; secretaries - Sue Morgan and Alison George; treasurer - Trevor Nicholas; horticultural - Diane Parry and Joyce James.
