Sir, I do not recall the date, but as a very young trumpet player with Albert Bevan's Royal Gatehouse Dance Orchestra, I recall Don Lusher coming to Tenby. He actually approached Albert Bevan looking for a job, but was told that the present line-up was satisfactory thank you. For years afterwards, Albert used to drop into conversation that he had turned Don Lusher down. Don, with a group of musicians, which included pianist Stan Butcher, who went on to become a very well known arranger, played at Shanleys South Beach Pavilion. The dance was very poorly attended, while at the same time we were playing at the De Valence to a packed house. Shanley was obviously in the wrong part of the town. I, myself, played with Don Lusher and Stan Butcher at the YMCA club in Commerical Row, Pembroke Dock. I hope this answers your reader's query (Observer People column, Friday, December 22). Incidentally, I am still playing, but only for my own pleasure.
Bobby Main, Pembroke Dock.
