Pembrokeshire children have been given safety advice on a range of hazards from road safety to cyber protection at this year's Crucial Crew. The annual event at the Withybush Showground in Haverfordwest teaches Year 6 pupils from across the county about how to deal with various dangers and hazards.

At the event held earlier this month, professionals from many different agencies gave the youngsters advice on how to stay safe on the road, on the beach, on farms and at home in a series of 11 safety challenges. The new police challenge was about internet safety and encouraged children not to give out their personal details on-line. Children were also advised on personal safety and told who they should contact if they or someone they know experiences abuse. Now in its 14th year, the two-week event has hosted over 20,000 children in Pembrokeshire over the years, with another 1,500 attending for the first time this year.

Clr. Jamie Adams, cabinet member for highways and transportation, who visited the event for the first time, thanked all who took part for their commitment and regard for the safety of children in the county.

"The feedback we have is that the children enjoy it and learn valuable lessons," he said. Among others who who visited the event was Paul Davies AM, who added: "This is an excellent event and it's brilliant the way the experts make the challenges fun while at the same time possibly making the difference between life and death." Pupils attending the event went home with a goodie bag with Crucial Crew tee-shirts sponsored by Chevron Texaco. Meanwhile, the Crucial Crew team were recently presented with certificates from the High Sheriff of Dyfed in recognition of their service to the community. Organisations taking part in this year's event were: Dyfed Powys Police; Mid and West Wales Fire Brigade; Welsh Ambulance Service; Maritime and Coastguard Agency; Pembrokeshire County Council's road safety unit, waste strategy section, school transport division and food safety unit; Western Power; The Family Abuse Centre and the National Farmers Union. Organisers would like to thank sponsors Chevron Texaco and Powersafe for their financial support and also the support given by the showground staff.
