Pupils from Tenby's Greenhill School who attend the school's Japanese Language Club, have been busy raising funds for the Japan Tsunami Appeal.

Students from Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 who attend the club, took part in various fundraising events over three days, including bucket collections and raising awareness of the tragedy in Japan through assembly talks.

"The students have been very moved by what they have seen with people pulling together in light of the tragic events in Japan and enthusiastically were able to collect £260 for the British Red Cross Relief Fund for the earthquake and tsunami victims in Japan," said teacher Tim Bercury.

Since March 11, the Japanese Red Cross has sent 230 response teams of more than 1,200 staff and volunteers to the stricken region, many of whom are trained doctors and nurses.

Red Cross teams have been providing first aid, emergency healthcare and psychological support, as well as assisting the authorities with evacuations near nuclear plants and staffing shelters for evacuees. Red Cross volunteers have been distributing relief, including personal hygiene kits and blankets, providing hot meals, clearing debris and transporting injured people.

Gillian Couch, assistant manager of the Tenby Red Cross shop in Upper Frog Street, said: "The British Red Cross is grateful to the pupils of Greenhill School for supporting the Japan Tsunami Appeal.

"The costs of the relief effort, and of rebuilding the homes and lives of those affected, will be immense. Donations to the British Red Cross Tsunami Appeal will be used to help the Japanese people recover from this devastating natural disaster over the coming months and years."
