Pembrokeshire's spectacular coastline will be entirely accessible by public transport this summer, thanks to an innovative network of buses.
The Pembrokeshire Coastal Buses Services will be back on the road, seven days a week, from tomorrow (Saturday).
The 'Poppit Rocket', 'Strumble Shuttle', 'Celtic Coaster', 'Puffin Shuttle' and 'Coastal Cruiser' carried over 40,000 passengers last year.
Kirsty Morris, Greenways Officer, said "The coastal bus services are an important link for walkers on the Pembrokeshire Coast National Trail.
"The Poppit Rocket, Strumble Shuttle and Coastal Cruiser winter buses will continue to run three days a week until the end of April and then the summer buses will start running seven days a week from May 1 May to September 26."
The 'Poppit Rocket' is operated by Richards Bros. and follows the coastline between Fishguard and Cardigan, stopping at Pwllgwaelod, Dinas Cross, Newport, Moylegrove, Poppit Sands, St. Dogmaels and Cardigan.
The 'Strumble Shuttle' is also operated by Richards Bros. and follows the coastline between Fishguard and St. Davids, stopping at Goodwick, Pontiago, Strumble Head, Trefasser Cross, St. Nicholas, Tregwynt, Mathry, Abercastle, Trefin, Llanrhian, Porthgain, Abereiddi and St. Davids.
The 'Celtic Coaster' is a wheelchair accessible bus operated by W.H. Collins and takes you from St. Davids to Porth Clais, St Justinians and Whitesands.
The 'Puffin Shuttle' is operated by Summerdale and travels along the coast between St. Davids and Milford Haven, passing through Solva, Newgale, Broad Haven, Little Haven, Marloes, Dale, St. Ishmaels and Herbrandston.
The 'Coastal Cruiser' is operated by Silcox and is the first bus in the UK to carry surfboards, bicycles and wheelchairs, as well as all your beach/walking/climbing equipment! It runs on 'Bio-diesel', an environmentally friendly fuel, and takes you around the Angle Peninsula, from Pembroke Dock to Pembroke, Angle, Bosherston and Stackpole.
All these services have been designed and introduced by Pembrokeshire County Council in conjunction with the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority as part of the 'Pembrokeshire Greenways' project. Funding is provided by the County Council's allocation of Local Transport Services Grant and the National Park.
The coastal buses are a valuable solution to rural transport problems along the coastline between Cardigan and Pembroke, providing daily public transport to both locals and walkers, with some areas receiving public transport for the first time. It is anticipated that the services will continue to reduce the number of people using cars to visit the National Park.
All Welsh bus pass holders will be pleased to learn that their passes are valid on all Pembrokeshire Coast Bus Services.
