PILOT Joe Edmundson flew many types of aircraft during his long RAF career, but for him there was one which was extra special - the Sunderland flying boat. And when Joe died suddenly in November, at the age of 85, his family knew exactly where donations should be made in his memory - to the local Sunderland Trust which aims to recover and display a unique Mark I Sunderland in Pembroke Dock. Very quickly family and friends raised £350 and when regulars at Joe's favourite local pub, the 'First and Last' at Waterloo, heard about it, they joined in the fund-raising. With licensee Richard Maynard's help, darts, pool and quiz competitions were organised and soon another £150 was added to the total. On Friday, January 11, at the 'First and Last', Joe's three sons, Rob, Andy and Mike, and licensee Richard Maynard presented a cheque for £500 to John Evans, project manager of the Pembroke Dock Sunderland Trust. Said Rob: "Dad flew Sunderlands from RAF Pembroke Dock and retired here in the 1970s. For him the Sunderland was always the best. He didn't speak much of his time in the RAF, but we all knew how fond he was of Sunderlands." Added Andy: "We are very pleased that donations in his memory will help towards the project to return a Sunderland to Pembroke Dock and we as a family are most grateful to Richard and patrons of the 'First and Last' for their wonderful support."
