A £39m plan has been developed to improve hospital facilities in Withybush Hospital. The plan aims to create a 21st century hospital facility that will complement the £8.75m A&E department and £1.3m MRI scanner developments already underway. It includes the creation of far more single en-suite rooms, modern working environments for staff and a host of better designed facilities for patients. The Trust is seeking an extra £39m in Welsh Assembly Government funding to roll out the plan over the next four years and separate business cases will need to submitted for consideration by Welsh Assembly Government for each element of the plan. Said acting chief executive Caroline Oakley: "This plan has been developed to ensure that Withybush Hospital can provide excellent patient and family- centred care in modern facilities well into the future. It has been developed in partnership with key stakeholders and is achievable through opportunities created by new medical and surgical technology. These modern practices are good news for patients and allow the Trust to make better use of facilities and resources for the benefit of patients." Details of the improvement plan were recently presented to members of Pembrokeshire and Derwen NHS Trust Board. The plan will be rolled out in three phases between 2007 and 2013 and Phase One, to be implemented in stages, includes: • The completion of the £8.75M A&E department and the integration of emergency and unplanned services into one service. • The construction of two new clean air theatres above the new A&E. • The completion of the £1.3m MRI scanner unit offering advanced diagnostics to patients who will no longer need to travel time outside of the county. • The creation of more single en-suite rooms providing greater privacy and dignity and reducing the risk of infection. This will involve the redesign of all inpatient areas. • Improved rehabilitation services at both Withybush Hospital and in the community and the provision of a new Rehabilitation Treatment Centre in Haverfordwest. • Provision of a new renal dialysis service with up to 12 dialysis stations for patients who currently have to travel to Carmarthen or further. Phase 2, scheduled to begin in 2009, will include: • A new Paediatric Unit for children, bringing together the children's ward, special care baby unit and children's outpatients services and therapies into one combined child and family-friendly facility. • A new and larger Chemotherapy Day Unit to include more consulting rooms, more holistic therapy facilities and more information resources for cancer patients. This will significantly increase the money already raised by the Bucketful of Hope appeal to improve Chemotherapy Day Services. • Bringing together gynaecology and maternity facilities to meet the needs of Pembrokeshire women. • Provision of modern staff facilities and offices with improved nurse observation desks adjacent to single rooms to minimise distractions and improve patient contact time. Phase 3, scheduled to begin in 2011, will include: • The construction of new staff residences for trainee doctors. • The provision of overnight accommodation for visitors. Said director of operations for acute and community, Mrs. Mags Barnaby: "This plan is focused entirely on improvements to benefit Pembrokeshire patients. It is exciting and visionary and we know there is much work to do. Pembrokeshire is already at the forefront of significant developments to ensure patients are treated in the right place at the right time by the right care provider and these improvement plans represent a quantum leap towards achieving this."
