A former Mayor of Tenby has touted a project to add a list of names to the town’s War Memorial which were previously omitted to mark the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day.

Correspondence from former councillor John Griffiths, who was Mayor of the town in 2007, came before members of Tenby Town Council at their meeting on Wednesday night.

“When Andrew Davies, the town clerk, and I conducted research for the amended Roll of Honour in St. Mary’s Church we identified some 20 names that had been omitted from the town War Memorial in Trafalgar Gardens,” he wrote.

“I would like to propose that the council consider adding these names to the War Memorial to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day in November 2018,” continued Mr. Griffiths.

Should the town council support the proposal, Mr. Griffiths proposed that formal approval from the county council be sought, and a survey be commissioned to confirm the feasibility and costing of such a project.

He also suggested that any member of the public who is aware of any name that has been omitted from the memorial be invited to contact the town clerk with details for verification and inclusion.

As the original War Memorial was funded by public subscription, including house to house collections by the then borough councillors, Mr. Griffiths asked if the public could again be invited to subscribe so that it becomes a “project by the residents and for the residents of Tenby.”

Speaking on the proposal, Clr. Trevor Hallett backed the project, stating that it was a “brilliant idea” and something that should have been done a long time back.

Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown praised Mr. Griffiths for the work he still continued to do for the town, stating that he is “always enthusiastic” about the town and community, whilst she and her fellow councillors agreed to support the proposal.
